Use a hammer and a flat, stiff blade like a paint stripper. Get it behind the tile and the wall and they should come off with some gentle tapping. Depending on the strength of the tile cement you may also lose some plaster.

Never never tile over its a real bad idea. Coz if your there long enough you will have two layers to get off. If there is a problem with the wall later on you have two layers to get through.
Best way if they do not come off easily with a hammer and chisel is to hire an SDS drill and get a comb bit and a chisel bit tough gloves and goggles. The SDS drill is like a mini kango should rack them off. Of course if the have been stuck on well with a cement adhesive they may just take ages to get off any way

roxys idea is good (tiling over) but othewise use a hammer to break one tile, then use a scraper, or thin chisel to get "under" the other tiles. you'll have to remove whatever was used to fix the old tiles too, otherwise you're gonna have a very uneven surface

If your wall tiles are in good condition and you don't' need to knock down the wall, try tiling on top of them - it's the perfect surface - smooth, flat and the adhesive will bond well.

put another layer of tiles over an existing one. It will cover completely even if some tiles are missing in the old layer.

id use a hammer and chisel...but i dont know much about demolition...so be carefull!! but i would think...once you have one tile out...you could chisel out behind the rest!! try it any way...if you just hammer them out theyll fly everywere and you might dammage you walls! good luck
