Yes, you can apply for any illness. However be prepared for a lengthy process especially when it pertains to mental illness.
AND you must be able to prove that it will create a disability situation for 6 months or longer.
The process for mental illness usually takes 18 months or longer. You will also probably receive a "denied opinion" the first two applications, which you can appeal. Most mental illness cases are decided in the last phase, the court opinion.
Most people hire an attorney for the appeals process but they will take 33% of the original settlement. For example if you are approved after 15 months you will receive back pay from the original file date. And the attorney will take their cut, the check will be mailed directly to them and then they will, in turn, pay you the remainder.
I argued my case 3 times and won without an attorney, but I don't recommend that for everyone. I did have a working knowlegde of the system which you can glean by researching your individual illnesses criteria and then be able to prove, with doctor's and hospitalizations records. You can find the criteria at their website. Also, concurrent with an application for SSI you can apply for SSDI, if you have an acceptable work history. SSI is straight welfare, and your check will only be according to the standard of living set forth in their policies. And it is small, be prepared to live in extreme poverty. Your SSDI can be a larger check, that is determined by actual points incurred during your working history.
As you can see this is a confusing process and with ADHD your best option may be to hire an attorney. And if you are one of the tens of 1000's of Americans with mental illness you will be strapped for cash and may have to live in a homeless shelter. So, those are the facts, you have to be in very dire straits to qualify for and receive SSI/SSDI and were I not suffering from PTSD, which leaves me at times unable to function in the corporate environment, or even in an unskiIled or semi-skilled position, I would rather work, it's easier. The good news is that I have made tremendous progress in learning to handle my illness through many years of theraphy. What caused my mental illness? Extreme child abuse compounded by an ex-husbands brutality. Good luck

You would be applying for Social Security Disability. You can do this at any age. You would need forms from a doctor to submit to the Social Security Administration. Check with your Social Security office as how to go about this.

Your Doctor would have to file for you I believe. Your doc will be the one to decide if it's worth filing. They won't just do it, if it can be managed.
