The problem stems from a change in US strategy.

Prior to 9-11 and thru the Cold War, each side had enough weapons to destroy the other, so that if Russia attacked us, we would destroy them and vice versa. The policy of the US Govt was that we would only strike if we were striked.

After 9-11 Rumsfield, Wolfowitz and Cheny (American Enterprise Institute) got it changed to pre-emptive: if we think you are going to attack we will hit first.

We attacked Iraq because we thought they were a threat but they were nothing - no weapons, no army , no resitance.

Now Iran and N Korea are worried that they will suffer the same fate and they only way to prevent it is to have a weappn that would deter us from attacking them without provacation.

If Iran has a nuclear weapon, they could destroy Tel-Aviv and there is nothing we could do about it, gauranteeing their safety. If N Korea has nuclear weapons, then if we attack they can destroy Toykyo. This then leads to a deterrance.

So, if Iran and N Korea have nuclear weapons, the world is safer from the US war-mongering.

I doubt that either country would use the nukes offensively since it means their destriction in retaliation. But by having nukes it prevneets us from attacking them they way we did Iraq.

I think that it's just a threat. Just to make people scared. In the end, if they attacked, it would spark the biggest world war yet, involving literally EVERYONE, even the smaller countries. In the meantime, it is just a threat and most likely the tactic of brinkmanship, used in vietnam as well.

N. Korea is attempting to blackmail other countries into providing it aid. In a couple of months they will offer to 'discuss' the missile issue if they get 'x' in foreign aid.

They have been playing this game for decades.

just like kids in a playground wanting to win every time.

They test missiles, just like the U.S. does.

The difference is that the media in the U.S. plays it up.
