By setting sharp, clearly defined goals, you can measure and take pride in the achievement of those goals. You can see forward progress in what might previously have seemed a long pointless grind. By setting goals, you will also raise your self-confidence, as you recognize your ability and competence in achieving the goals that you have set.
Goals are set on a number of different levels: First you decide what you want to do with your life and what large-scale goals you want to achieve. Second, you break these down into the smaller and smaller targets that you must hit so that you reach your lifetime goals. Finally, once you have your plan, you start working to achieve it.
The first step in setting personal goals is to consider what you want to achieve in your lifetime, as setting Lifetime goals gives you the overall perspective that shapes all other aspects of your decision making.
To give a broad, balanced coverage of all important areas in your life, try to set goals in some these categories (or in categories of your own, where these are important to you):
Artistic:
Do you want to achieve any artistic goals? If so, what?
Attitude:
Is any part of your mindset holding you back? Is there any part of the way that you behave that upsets you? If so, set a goal to improve your behavior or find a solution to the problem.
Career:
What level do you want to reach in your career?
Education:
Is there any knowledge you want to acquire in particular? What information and skills will you need to achieve other goals?
Family:
Do you want to be a parent? If so, how are you going to be a good parent? How do you want to be seen by a partner or by members of your extended family?
Financial:
How much do you want to earn by what stage?
Physical:
Are there any athletic goals you want to achieve, or do you want good health deep into old age? What steps are you going to take to achieve this?
Pleasure:
How do you want to enjoy yourself? - you should ensure that some of your life is for you!
Public Service:
Do you want to make the world a better place by your existence? If so, how?
Once you have decided your goals in these categories, assign a priority to them from A to F. Then review the goals and re-prioritize until you are satisfied that they reflect the shape of the life that you want to lead. Also ensure that the goals that you have set are the goals that you want to achieve, not what your parents, spouse, family, or employers want them to be.

This is exactly the point!
If we want to know our purpose we need to seek the will of God.He created us for that purpose.
It involves using the gifts He has given us to be a part of His plan. He will use us whether we are willing or not. But tell me, Why don't you want to be a part of the most fantastic thing ever? Why don't you want to be a willing participant in God's will?
Accept Him as your savior
Study His word alone and in fellowship with other believers
Ask Him what your gifts are and ask him how He wants you to use them.
Suddenly life will have great purpose and meaning.
You will realize waking and sleeping are all about serving and learning. We are on Earth to learn how to be citizens of heaven. Death is not the end but a transition from physical to spiritual.
We have to remember that God is with us even now. He has a plan and you are an important part of it.

Considering the scinario cuts out a large portion of hungry unemployed and estitute people in the world? I would say no.. not life but in of itself an idea that life will be complacent and boring no matter what?
Life is what you make it. if you feel trapped its not because life slapped you with a job and the curse of having a bed to sleep in at night.

Not for me. There are also the relationships we nurture in life---those with deity/ies, loved ones, friends, co-workers. There is noticing and appreciating the beauty that surrounds us. The joy of making a positive difference in someone's life or helping other living things around us.

What do you want? Desire? It can be yours. Read The Richest Man in Babylon. Then, realize that the Universe (God) will give you what you put your energy into. So, serve others, you'll be served. Cheat others, you'll be cheated. Follow God's commands and he'll give you eternal life. Yeah, don't worry, this life is not the end all. It's really the beginning.

Bad day huh? I had one or two years doing that...then we jumped into a whole new lifestyle of MAYBE going to bed the same day and earning money along the way ... I'd like to think I have adopted the life of 'surprise to me - no surprise to DAD' since he *foreknew me and *predestined me to this ... currently I am working my butt off .. earning pesos and risking my sanity! Helps to change your perspective with the things you do now ... Variety... (DAD by the way is my God) ...

Life is much more than just daily routines. Finding joy and meaning in and beyond your routine is apart of life but not the point of it.
Life to me is about learning, understanding, and love. If you can incorporate those things into your life you will find the meaning you seek.

I created not jinn and mankind except that they might worship me.(1)
According to the meaning of this mighty verse, the purpose for the sending of man to this world and the wisdom implicit in it, consists of recognizing the Creator of all beings and believing in Him and worshipping Him. The primordial duty of man and the obligation incumbent upon him are to know God and believe in Him, to assent to His Being and unity in submission and perfect certainty.

life is what you make of it. i was taught you come into the world with nothing and leave with nothing, so have a good time in between. its silly to work your butt off for 65 years to only burn out and spend your golden years in a nursing home. have a great time along the way.

Life is what we make it. If we choose to allow ourselves to settle for that then, YES that is our life. However, people can decide that they want more and live each day as it is our last and take chances
