There is a clinical condition where the body is in a catatonic hibernation which is sometimes drug induced but can be induced by extreme physical shock as from an accident or extreme emotional shock as in "scared to death". (Sometimes referred to as the zombie death) The person can be in all appearances dead but is really not dead at all. This happens many more times than modern medicine would like to admit.
On a more interesting note. The terms "bell ringer" and "grave yard watch/shift" come from the practice of placing a watchman at a graveyard after someone has been buried. A bell is posted at the grave site with a string that goes down to and into the coffin and is attached to the "deceases" hand. If by some chance the person was not really dead when they awaken the natural reaction is to move their hands and they would pull the string and the bell would sound. The "graveyard" watchman would hear the bell and call for help to dig the person back up. Of course the watchman would have to go to the pub the next afternoon and relate that he had a real "bell ringer of a night" This is not a joke. This was practiced in England during the 1400's through the 1800's.
So there really is historical precedent for people being declared dead and "coming back to life"

An old man and his wife were listening to a preacher on the radio. He said that sick people should put one hand on the radio and one hand on the sick part of their body. The old man put a hand on the radio and the other hand down the front of his shorts. "Ellsworth!" yelled his wife, "he said he could cure the sick not raise the dead!!!"
