The primary symptoms of ear mites are scratching at the ears, shaking of the head, and a dark discharge. These symptoms mimic other ear diseases, so an accurate diagnosis is imperative.
Here is picture of them>>http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ear_mite
Revolution will get rid of them. You can get it at your vet clinic. It is just a tube of liquid you apply to the skin.

try using a sulfur soap check if the edges are infected with demotex mites From my understanding, demodex is not a genetic disease. Demodex mites feed on systemic yeast, dietary yeast and/or sugar in the system. Demodex mites take advantage of an immature or lowered immune system, which is why the very young get it, and sometimes the very old, or ill. A dog's immune system is usually not mature until at least one year of age. This is only one reason why it is not advisable to breed dogs younger than 12 - 18 months.
Demodex mites are living in just about every dog, deep within the hair follicles. When pups are nursing, the mites migrate from the mother to the pups. This is why the most common areas to show demodex are first on the face, head and front paws, then migrating to every other area of the body.
When the immune system is maturing, but battling to keep the mites in balance, you can sometimes see hairless patches appearing and disappearing on different parts of the body. It may even progress to the point where the mites colonize and erupt on the surface, making the skin look pimply or rashy.
I would suggest dabbing lemon juice or apple cider vinegar on the spots. The vinegar will keep the odor down from any secondary staph infection. Yeast ears will commonly be a problem during this battle.
hope this helps

could be ear mites or a yeast infection in the ear. the stuff the vet has does work way better than over the counter stuff, we had the same problem and tried all the petsmart crap. went to the vet, got some mal-otic and cleared the problem right up! it was a yeast infection not ear mites though. if you are going to clean the ear, theres a simple mix of vinegar and water that dr.b told me i could use but i forgot how much it was, 3 parts vinegar, 1 part water i think? but he said Never ever use q-tips at home, only cotton balls, as dogs ears are very sensitive and one wrong poke could cause some serious problems. the vet is the only one who will be able to tell you if it is in fact ear mites or not, because they will take a sample and look at it under the microscope. (dr. m showed me some once and those little buggers are nasty lookin!)

Dog with ear mites will scratch around their ears and/or shake their heads. The amount of scratching and shaking depends on the severity of the mite infestation. In a serve cases the ear canals will bleed and either fresh or dried blood will appear inside the canal. Dried blood resembles coffee grounds. If you peer into your pet's ears and notice a build-up of a material that looks like 'coffee grounds,' then your pet probably has ear mites, although a bacterial and/or yeast infection is also a possibility.
Ear mites are very common, but still serious. Left untreated, they severely damage the ear canals and eardrum and can cause permanent hearing loss.

If your dog has mites, he will scratch his ears, there will be black stuff and his ears will have a yeasty smell to them. Yes there is stuff you can buy over the counter at the store but it is not that good. Preferably you should take him to the vet and make sure it is earmites and not something else. Plus what ever the vet gives you is better than store bought medicines.

Sounds more like he has an ear infection rather than mites. Yes, he would need to see a vet and get the right medication.

The ears will be irritated inside, with a lot of brown/black gunk. They also smell pretty gross.
A simple solution is getting mineral oil and putting some in the ear, squish it around and clean the ear with q-tips.

That black stuff in your dog's ears is nothing to be concerned about, it's just ear wax and dirt. All dogs scratch their ears, either due to fleas or shedding fur that gets into the ear.
