That's one of those wishful thinking myths that has floated around for years and years. Unfortunately, the answer is no. Untoasted bread and toasted bread are exactly the same number of calories. If anything, toast will cost you more calories because when you butter it, the hot toast melts the butter so it soaks in and in fact you will use more butter.
Too bad, isn't it?

Bread is toasted to allow you to make 2 slices adequate for a meal. (You eat less if it's toasted) It takes more soft bread (fresh bread) to satisfy your hunger because it is compressed into a smaller size, but still retains all the calories. It's possible to bite and chew a half slice of fresh bread in one mouthful, but you can't do that with a slice of toast.
