No. I'm for punishing children, as it helps establish the dominance of the Parental unit early on. If children get too uppity, mentally challenged or not, then a simple smack, with an explanation of the smack is sufficient. However, some mentally challenged children cannot help themselves, due to the way their brain functions. It all depends on the case.

Use your best judgment.

Of course it is. I believe it is morally wrong to hit all children, so why should mentally challenged children be treated any differently?

No you shouldn't hit a person who is mentally challenged! Why,because they really don't know any better and it would be better to just hold the person if the child is hitting you. There are ways to hold a person. I take martial arts, and there are locks you can use to protect yourself or control the person. Hitting a smaller person isn't going to solve the problem that the person has already and has no control over.

It's wrong to "hit" any child. I'm assuming you mean hit and not spank. I, personally, do not agree with spanking, but it is the parent's choice. With a mentally challenged child I would think spanking wouldn't be very effective. If they don't understand what they are being spanked for then it's not going to prevent the behavior. It would most likely be better to sit down and try to speak to the child, telling them exactly what they did wrong. Try to use words the child would understand.

It's wrong to hit ANY child!!

If the child is behind in their development for any reason, they may not understand the reason you are punishing them. But do not hit any child, mentally challenged or not!!!

YES!!! Very wrong. These children do not understand that they are doing anything wrong so to treat them this way is abuse. My son is disabled and i would NEVER dream of lifting my hands to him. Also i would hate any one else to do so as he is hurt so much easier than anyone else. It is a special person who is given a special child to care for and nurture. Have you ever spent any time with a special needs child? They are SPECIAL. DON'T HURT THEM!!
