I am sorry, I loaned out my book that has that answer.
But, I highly recommend the book to anyone that wants to understand the history of the coming of god-oriented thought in the human mind.
"The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind" by Julian Jaynes.
I'll give you a very brief synopsis.
More than, say, 5 thousand years ago, the human mind was schizophrenic.
The left and right hemispheres had very poor communication.
Most people 'lived' in their left hemisperes and did not have a sense of self, of me, like we do.
In time of significant distress or indecision, their right hemisphere would 'say' what to do. But, because of the lack of integration of consciousness between the left and right hemispheres, the 'saying' would seem to the left hemisphere (the home of the self, as it were) as coming from outside of itself..as coming from outside of the body.
Typically, according to Mr. Jaynes, when schizophrenics, and likely ancient bicameral peoples heard encouraging voices, they seem(ed) to come from a location slightly up and to the right, outside of the head.
When the 'voice' was mean and scolding, it comes (came) from the upper left, outside of the head.
As the brain, through many generations of evolution, came to be more integrated, individuals came to experience less and less of the voices of guidance.
Being that the voice came, orginally, in the form of apparitions of wise elders or dead relatives, as the voices disappeared, the people created organized ceremonies/ rituals and sacred places of meditation that were designed to help the individual to be able to 'hear' the voices.
As the hemispherical integration progressed even farther ( through subsequent generations), the voices of guidance become harder and harder to conjure. This lead to more and more elaborate ceremonies and ceremonial structures in the hopes of showing the 'voices', the gods, that they were still respected and desired, here on Earth.
This lead to the modern concepts of gods...and to the modern religions.

The concept of God wasn't created! God created the concept of man!! Adam and Eve started the first society about 6100yrs ago when earth was CREATED! There are more evidence on creation than on evolution! Evolution is based on THEORIES started by Charles Darwin in the 1830's! All you need to know are in the Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth (BIBLE)!!!

I would have to second mesopotamia. But considering ika stones and other intelligantly carves stones from millions of years ago depict idols I dont think the majority of people could validate how far back the concept of god could have been developed or carried over since so many cultures rarely carry over concepts of religion intact from culture to culture.
While transplanting of social structure did happen belief is highly contaminated even within tribal cultures.
So I guess the answer would be.. what society has exsisted without some sort of concept of god?

At this point in time, right now today, the first society that has been documented to have a concept of "a God" is the one referred to in the Bible which would have been the pre-flood era of Noah. During the time he built the Ark along with his family he preached of the coming cataclysms that was to befall mankind if they did not repent of their sinful ways. So the "concept" was fully known to a society during that time frame.
In other cultures in the same and earlier periods had many gods (poly-theism) not "a God" (mono-theism)
If you would like to learn more about the "concept of a God" I would suggest the link below.
Enjoy your reading.

Hello, I am Mehmed Emin YILDIZ from Türkiye.
Yesterday, by the yahoo's question pages, I asked a question or dictated that I can prove existance of Allah giving logical and scientifical examples. And you infromed that you are interested in searcinh for Him.
Firstly I thank you so much because of interests abouth Allah.
Here I will give some very easy examples from the normal life. This is my way to explain His existances giving daily events or example that all we know and see in the life. Here are some...
One of the logical examples: If there is something or movement, there must be a "maker" or "First Mover" of that thing.
First example: We are using computer right now. How did that computer exist? Of course, some engineers studied, calculated, designed and finally programmed that computer, right. If this is the real, logical and scientific way, can anybody say that, that computer was made by causes and effects or by itself? Or, is it possible to say that a computer can be produced "without" any engineer or programmer?
Second example: We are living in a house, flat or in a building, right. Is it possible for our houses or flats to be existed without any civil engineer or architect or workers? We can add more examples like above. As a result, every existeces must have their creator. So, we are looking at the outside, we see that the atoms, nature, world, plants, animals, seas, mountains, air, light, rain, snow, sky, humanbeings, Moon, Sun, planets, galaxies, etc... whole universe exist!. Those are saying by their own language, logically, scientifically: "If there is something, something exists", there must be a "EXISTOR of those thing". As we see, understand and accept that, there have to be only One Creator of everything meaning whole universe from atoms to the galaxies, who is Only One Allah!...
These are logical examples, If there is some non-understandable points, please dondt hesitate to ask. If you need more example, we can talk in yahoo messenger or in msn messenger: mehmedeminyildiz@hotmail.com , eminmehmed@yahoo.com.
That is all for now.
Best Regardings.
