Lets say there's this guy who has been good his entire life. He gives back to his community, helps ppl, saves lives, is regarded as a hero, and hasn't commited any major sins. But he doesn't believe in God. Will he go to hell (according to Christian/Catholic beliefs)?

I'm not sure who to pick as best answer...
Also, if he does go to hell, it seems kind of unfair.. I mean, so a rapist/murderer who raped 200 women and killed 12 guys could go to heaven as long as he repents his sins and truly feels sorry? Whoo hoo... -_-

Being good, has ZERO to do with salvation. Believe what you want too.

i'm not a 100% sure on this but i don't believe he will go to hell. the catholic teaching goes beyond just believing in God, it's more on living as God would have lived if He were here on earth. this guy you're describing seems to live the christian way, helping others when he can and on his free will. so i don't think he will go to hell, unless he practices satanism, which is a totally new topic. sorry if this sounds confusing. hope my answer makes sense.

It depends on why he did those great acts.

If he did the acts simply to become a hero and otherwise acted in a selfish and self-centered manner, then yes, I'd say he goes to hell (or, as some would describe it, his life would be hell).

However, if he acted in a selfless manner and did those great deads to help society, then he would go to Heaven (or, as some would describe, his life would be paradise).

As to this person's supposed belief in God or not - someone who says they don't believe in God is really saying they don't believe in a particular view of God. Someone who chooses not to believe in an impersonal jealous god who demands to be worshiped in church can still believe in God that sits in your heart and warms it as you do good deads or in God in nature.

No not believing in God is not a sin no matter what the as$ rapping priest may tell you, but if you have study the bible, and know the word of God as they may call it then your screwed, but for now your a OK. and don't worry about hell. here's a little story. There's this guy went buy Gods word to the letter and he dies and goes to heaven, His first day in heaven with god he gets hungry and he notices below that he can see into hell and there's like this huge as$ party with like all the food you can imagine roasted pig and all. he walks over to God and says sorry for asking but can i get something to eat, God grabs a can of tuna and splits for the both of them while eating his tuna he sees everybody in hell eating like pigs and partying; the next day the same thing he gets hungry and goes to god, god does the same thing opens a can of tuna and splits it with him. the third day while god is serving him the tuna he says God I'm sorry for asking but how come were here eating this great tuna while in hell its like this supper buffet?. God looks over at him and says it doesn't pay to cook for just the two of us.

You have to take in the knowledge of God and his son Jesus Christ.how can you think you are going to heaven if you don't believe in God.even though you do good all your life you still have to believe in your heart no matter what, because we inherited sin,but then it is not for me to say we will let God decide.

In order for the hero to go to heaven, he has to 1) accept Jesus Christ as his savior and 2) practice what Jesus taught every living second and love everyone else like he loves himself.

No other conditions.

Why should he receive that which he has not accepted?

If you are dirt poor and I offer you $1million, yet you refuse it, is it my fault then that you are poor?

No sin is allowed into heaven. None. That would make you "dirt poor". God offers you heaven for free through the forgiveness He gives freely. If you refuse it, why should you go to heaven?

Heaven is not ours to gain. Heaven is ours to refuse.

Gal 2:16 nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the Law; since by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified.
