clothing is something that is useful to the body while it lives.
it's no different than putting a magic amulate or sacred deer antlers in a coffin.
the original intent of burying anything with the dead was to outfit them for the after life. so again, why is someone who has no belief in an afterlife buried in clothing? aren't they aware of what it insinuates?

funerals are for the living is a fairly recent concept. the whole span of history and prehistory taken into consideration, it just doesn't anwser the question.

so it's convention, which would be recent, like atheism?

Just think how many people could be clothed if the dead were naked. I guess it would be embarrassing for the family of the naked dead dude if rigamorsasis (where all muscles go hard) sets in... and... well I'll leave that to the imagination.

It's sort of like Christians using an alphabet the origins of which are heathen: it's just convention. An atheist being buried in clothes doesn't insinuate a suppressed belief in an afterlife any more than a Christian using the ABCs insinuates suppressed polytheistic tendencies.

It's similar that way. Most people would view the burying of a naked body as disrespectful. Besides, many people have open casket funerals, and they certainly can't have bodies naked for those.

I can't speak for other religions, but I know that in the Christian faith it is believed that you can't take anything material with you to heaven (the "afterlife"). The clothing really has nothing to do with the religion, and it is just a formality out of respect for the deceased and their family.

Well, you dress up a body for a wake, and taking the clothes off would be a nasty and unnecessary process.
Why dress up a body for a wake, you might say to an atheist, well, precisely to remember that person as he/she existed (as there is no afterlife and the soul presumably dies) and remember "the good times." As far as I know, most atheists aren't opposed to remmbering, even commemorating people. Also, remember that not all atheists doubt an afterlife.
By the way, all of these answers are coming from a logical Christian who just hates to see weak arguments brought out for or against deism/Christianity....

I think people either don't give specific instructions on what to dress or not dress them in upon death when they are athiests. Maybe it makes the morticians or funeral parlor people feel better? It certainly would be a requirement if they were to have an open casket. Also, I'm fairly sure not everyone would think about what being buried in clothes insinuated.

One of the logical examples: If there is something or movement, there must be a "maker" or "First Mover" of that thing. First example: We are using computer right now. How did that computer exist? Of course, some engineers studied,calculated,designed,pr... and finally programmed that computer, right. If this is the real, logical and scientific way, can anybody say that, that computer was made by causes and effects or by itself?Or, is it possible to say that a computer can be produced without an engineer or programmer?
Second example: We are living in a house, flat or in a building, right. Is it possible for our houses or flats to be existed without any civil engineer or architect or workers? We can add more examples like these. As a result, every existeces must have their creator. So, we are looking at the outside, we see that the world,humanbeings,plants,anima... whole universe exist!. So,logically, there have to be only One Creator of those who is Allah!

To put it simple. God or no God.

You have not a clue what the Funeral Home does to your body before putting you in a casket. OK? I already know you don't, or you would not have asked this. I have had first hand knowledge, several years of this. You won't see anyone with a low cut neck, or unbuttoned collar, few buttons down. For a reason. You absolutely will not see the chest or torso area.

You ask, I just gave a simple TRUE answer.

you can't have a open casket with a naked person for one. belief in god has really nothing to do with clothes. from the recorded time of burying people rich or poor. everyone was wrapped in cloth of some kind. most cheeze cloth. the rich had items buried with them. clothing has nothing to do with the afterlife. its all to make the person look good for the final time. many times as our family owns several funeral homes, i heard the families say they looked better dead than alive as our work was the best.

Speaking as a Forensic Pathologist in training. People are burried in clothing because no one want to see their naked *** before they go down into the ground. Actually, the families usually chose to bury their loved ones with particular clothing because that is a common practice and no one has really said, hey why not save time and money and bury them naked. Plus, that would make for one interesting viewing during the wake. (We wouldn't want to cause anymore untimely deaths.)

Nearly everyone is buried with clothing, even Christians who believe that their bodies aren't going to be used in the afterlife.

*hint*: Burials aren't really for the dead. They are for the living.
