to complete in a local competitions to state competitions to country then get your way to the top competitions(mainly international) and get qualified for the olympics

I had a teacher who is formerly a field hockey player and was one of the field hockey players for Team USA in Seoul, Korea for summer olympic in 1980's. She said work hard, and complete from the bottom and find your way around the world to be quailifed for the olympics.
