Hi, I just started babysitting the neighbors springer spaniel and he's been sleeping over. I bought these pig skin bones and he loves them at night .. takes 45 minutes before he eats it because we play with it. Are these safe to give daily? Please let me know if there is something that can be given daily that takes a long time for the doggie to consume.

For a springer, you don't want to give him chews that are too small , as when they devour them all, it can cause bowel blockage. I think that the really huge ones are safest, as they can't get much at a time, but it keeps them busy for weeks..Just take it away in daytime, so he will be happy to see it at night.
Get only natural flavored chews..no smoked, etc.
Get only ones that are a product of USA.

Those rawhide chews don;t digest well, so too much is dangerous.
You might ask the butcher for a knuckle bone. They are safe.

Firstly, ask the owners like the other user.

But my suggestion would be to skip the pig skin bones. I think I read somewhere that they're kind of fatty. Rawhide is another choice, but they have a small risk for the dog to choke because they can crack and are pretty hard. For me, I like Greenies. They're healthy, most dogs love em, they give the dog nice breath, and last pretty long.

Oh yeah, for the other suggestion about no greenies, I've heard about that digestive thing. But I've never seen it happening bef. It might though. I f you're caustious, try a Kong ball. They're 100% safe and the dogs really love to try to get treats out of it.

pig ears are great and not a problem to give doggie friends every day. Also check the local supermarket for "knuckle" bones or femurs of cows. Sounds kinda gross, but you can get a pretty large sized bone that doesn't splinter or get chewed up too fast ..a lot cheaper than the ones at the pet stores. I always get my dog a huge bone at christmas and keeps her busy for weeks..and this dog makes quick work out of most bones..but not these!

as with many of the above answers, pig skin bones are not a good idea daily, it can mess with the stomach. they are fine for occasional treats. milk bones are fine for daily use, but they dont take much time to eat. see if the dog just likes ice, or get dental treats, or bones such as CET hex. treats/bones. those work the best. PLEASE NO GREENIES, if the dog doesnt fully chew the greenies up into itty bitty pieces, it will get stuck in his intestines as dogs stomachs cannot break down greenies.

What you give your dog for treats should always depend on what his regular diet is (what sort of food he eats). For example if his regular food is more towards a treat food like my dog eats, Kibbles N bits, then the treat should be alittle smaller, alittle healthier. If it is more of a food like that then they also make many flavors of "vitamin" treats for dogs, as a human would take a multi vitamin in one of those new fangled chocolates or whatever. Yes I said new fangled...no that doesn't mean I'm old. lol. If it's a soft food then dog bisquits, and rawhides occassionally would be a good choice. If your dog is healthy generally and eats a food like Science Diet, along that nature then a snack like Pig Ears which you can get anywhere, alternated by bisquits would also be good. below my answer someone mention NYLABONES......research your answer as well because NYLABONES have recalled countless of times for killing dogs the bite off chunks of them that aren't supposed to come off............................their lawsuits range in the millions at this very moment...............search the web

i wouldnt give him pig skin bones or rawhides daily because its not good on their stomach. Give him toys squeeky toys, take him for walk, or to dog park. Try giving him an smoked bone for a meat market that way he's really not eating the bone but he is still staying busy.

ask the owners what they prefer....pig skin bones are not good for everyday...but once in a while is fine. How about carrots..some dogs love them, or take a nylabone and put peanut butter on it and then stick it in the freezer...this will keep him busy for a while as he trys to lick the frozen peanut butter off the bone.

Get him an edible Nylabone or just let him chew on a flavored non-edible Nylabone. Rawhides and pig ears aren't good for dogs. They're fattening and dogs choke from rawhide pieces (if they decided to swollow the piece) so it's dangerous.

I only give my dogs rawhide bones, pig skin bones, etc. once in awhile. They can upset the dog's stomach if you give him too many, because they're tough to digest. Give him a thick, knotted rope to play with instead.
