iceprincess- sorry I cannot believe that. If so how do you explain women being forced to wear the veil, people being stoned to death for adultery (would you say they wanted it)....

those people are oppressed because religion is government. imagine what our country would be like if ruled by a religion. for example, if our laws were based on the rules of the Catholic Church, birth control would be illegal. those countries are oppressed because religion is law.

In the current time, unfortunately, this is true. With the exception of Turkey and now Iraq, there are no majority Islamic countries that have true democracies. And the economic level of majority Islamic countries is on par with the 3rd World.

Unfortunately, the lack of economic development and the lack of freedom have lead to some pretty dire consequences for our time.

Now for the more difficult question: what is the solution?

It depends. Some countries have a great deal of development such as the Gulf States. Having said that, "Islamist" countries tend to be backwards. The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language defines Islamism as, "An Islamic revivalist movement, often characterized by moral conservatism, literalism, and the attempt to implement Islamic values in all spheres of life."

You have to be careful you don't generalize people when leveling an accusation like that. I think it's basically safe to say that, compared to our society, the code that Islam instills makes people what we would call repressed. As for oppressed, that's also largely up for debate on its definition, but as far as I know Islam doesn't oppress you, as long as you're a Muslim.

hmm..thats not really true..it just may seem like the people are opressed because of the way they act or the way they are dressed...but infact that is their culture..so its just a matter of how we dont understand their culture and/or religion..or any culture and/or religion that is different from ours in that matter.

Islam actually liberates people..it was the first religion to let women vote, be a part of politics, own land, make their own choices...etc therefore the more "islamic" a country, doesn't mean the people are more opressed or supressed.

Your observation is quite accurate. As for the writer who mentioned Saudi, look at the common people, not the royal family types. And for beautiful, believe it or not there are a LOT of people who flat don't give a dam-n if they offend some half-witted moron.

Yes. The same goes for Christianity. The most Christian places on this planet are damned miserable places to live. I conclude that misery causes religion.

What I can say is that any religion brings restriction. We have to be careful not to include much needed positive restrictions within suppressed and oppressed.
