Negative people usually are not very happy with their lives and it is a projection of their unhappiness.

Yah, like C_Bass said they want attention or maybe the person feels very sorry for themselves and are trying to get more and more pity. This usually backfires, I think.
Maybe they are just pissed and want to drag everybody else doen to their level. Only 2 reasons out of many.

A lot of the time it's because they like the attention. They know somebody's gonna jump in and reassure them. If that isn't the case, they may have just had a harder time of life than you.
