Here are some of my "symptoms":
I don't enjoy doing things such as going out, going to the movies, being with friends...
I've gained a lot of weight
My apetite has changed
I often think about death and dying
I've thought about suicide (but not about doing it...just how ppl would feel/react if I did do it)
I feel lazy and tired for no reason
I don't enjoy being around people
Everytime I make plans of going out I end up canceling them at the last minute because "I don't feel like going out"
I procrastinate a lot
...
etc.

Am I just plain ol' lazy, or is there something more to my "state" such as depresion????

I am well aware of the fact that I may need help, but I'm just too scared to "make a move"

Also, I'll be going off to college (away from home) in the fall & I'm kinda scared that I may end up "going crazy"

What should I do????

Also, thinks are not that bad (life)...I mean, I have loving parents and siblings; I get along with almost everyone I know; & I've always excelled academically...so I don't really see where my "problem" is coming from...

After I graduated from Highschool I got depressed with the exact same symptoms. I believe it is a form of depression. Think about it. The life as you knew it is now over. Everything around you has either started to change or will be doing so shortly, and you know it. You will have to start growing up soon, and it sucks! I have now shed my pounds, have a good job, and a wonderful husband. Sometimes a change of scenery is all you need to change all of your feelings. Start exercising a little everyday. Take a walk or walk around the mall. Make an attempt to eat the proper foods. Speak to the friends and family that make you feel better about yourself. Go to parties and clubs...the guys will hit on you and it will make you feel good about yourself. I don't think you are at the point where you need professional help, but if you think it is necessary than do it. Just maintain a happy life by relaxing, and doing things that you really enjoy doing. And, make sure you surround yourself with supportive people that will help you maintain the life you want.

Depression is a very common experience. Everyone feels fed up, miserable or sad sometimes. Usually the reason is obvious - disappointment, frustration, losing someone or something important. Such sadness and grief are normal and temporary reactions to life's stresses.
However, when a depressed mood continues for some time, whether following a particular event or for no apparent reason, the person may be suffering from clinical depression -

I feel for you. Yes, that's pretty much classic depression, and I suffer from many of the same sympoms. The best thing to do is have a talk with your family doctor. Also, excercise, eat healthy, don't short yourself on sleep, find a spiritual outlet/inlet, let go of grudges (you'd be surprised at what a relief it is!). It sounds cheesy, but doing pay-it-forward types of good deeds fends off depression. Listen to positive music, or better, play an instrument... and laugh as much as you can. Don't despair. There are lots of us out there going through the same thing. I hope you feel better very soon. Good luck!

hi your symptoms are pretty suggestive of depression i know as apart from studying about it in medical school I've suffered from it too for the last year . but it can be classified as depression if you have had these feelings for two weeks or more .
since you will be going off to college soon i suggest u seek help as soon as possible as the more u delay the harder it is to work through ur feelings.
don't think for a moment that people who have depression usually have something bad going on in their lives and since your life is not as bad you cant have it . you don't have to feel ashamed or guilty about it . don't agonise over the reason for these feelings ; it does not have to be a major roblem in life, sometmes the whole of all our minor troubles is more than the sum of them all.
think of depression (or any mental disease ) like any other disease, don't blame yourself for having these feelings focus on conquering them. do exercise and indulge in your favorite hobbies and don't give in to the temptation of feeding Ur low moods with food. believe me I've been there n while the food gives momentary comfort trying to loose all the extra weight is very difficult.... I'm still at it.
so please take professional help, and take Ur family into confidence they love you and will surely be there for you .
you can contact me if you need more advice .
take care

Most likely but don't jump the gun. It could just be a case of the blues. So what you need to do is to find out if you have a history of depression (in your family) if it's not in your family you could still have it, but it's less likely but there are always exceptions to these things. but if you do have a history then you need to see a doctor, maybe even run a blood test.

Please go to your doctor and mention what you are telling us here. Depression must be treated...you can't just wish it away. Depression hurts....and it will affect your performance in all areas of your life. You will see how much difference it will make once you are being treated. I never had true depression- (sadness yes!), but my brother did. He comitted suicide when he was 23. You must tell someone who deals with this problem every day. You are not the only person with this problem.....go before it's so bad that you don't even want help anymore. Go please, will ya?

You dont have to have "emotional issues" to cause depression. It could also be a chemical imbalance. You need to contact a Doctor. Just because you feel these symptoms, does not mean you are crazy. But please do not wait. There are alot of medications that could help you. But by going to a doctor, the can do simple lab work and check your chemical imbalance

Instead of trying to diagnose yourself, please see a doctor, psychologist, or whomever one is supposed to see. No rudeness intended, but some people try to diagnose themselves and turn out to be wrong. Besides, if you have depression, a prescribed medicine would work better than a regular medicine.
