"[They] point to the fact that four of the 9/11 terrorists, all of whom had violated immigration laws, were stopped for speeding before their attack. Had the police officers asked the right questions, terrorists could have been arrested under current law — but not under the Senate bill.
The classic case is Ziad Jarrah, who was at the controls of United Flight 93 when passengers fought the terrorists and the plane crashed in the Pennsylvania countryside. Jarrah was an illegal alien from Lebanon who had violated U.S. immigration laws but had avoided apprehension by authorities until he was stopped on Sept. 9, 2001, for speeding in Maryland on his way from Baltimore to join his confederates in Newark.
Nawaf al-Hazmi, the 9/11 plot’s second in command, also had been stopped for speeding April 1, 2001. The visa on his Saudi Arabian passport had expired 8½ months earlier, but the Oklahoma patrolman did not ask to see it."

I am not sure that our leaders are aware of what illegal means. I guess after you have break laws yourself and go unpunished the issue becomes a little foggy. If I was speeding, and I had drugs in my car and a police officer pulled me over, I would go to jail. Why is it that if you are illegal and a police pulls you over and your visa has expired, you dont go to jail. Are there different punishments for doing illegal things; One that is not punishable by law and one that is? Who decides? The problem I am having with all of this is that illlegal immigrants are not only mexicans. They are Italians, French, English, Chinese, Japanese, and black people from west indies ect ect ect. Crossing the border is not the only way you become illegal. You can come into the country legally and decide not to return. You status is now illegal. Even though the law allows you to just renew your arrival departure stamp. How can something so simple that will keep you from being illegal, be so hard. I have empathy for the mexicans who are trying to work to send money home for their family, however there are poor countries around the nation. People are starving in Africa, in Malaysia, in China, in Korea, in the caribean islands ect ect ect, and yet most of them find a way to do it the right way. Who dont want a better life for themselves and their children. If we all had that attitude than we would break the laws to make things better, no banks or business would be able to function. We must respect the laws of the land in the country you would like to become a part of. It is important to stop terrorists, and smugglers that take large sums of money from these very people to get them in the US under deplorable conditions. We have to take our power back as americans. Yes we were all immigrants at one point, but what makes us great is that, the many (the people) wants to be law abiding citizens, and you dont become a law abiding citizen by first breaking the laws. I cant tell you the amount of illegal people who have managed to own homes, buy nice cars, jewelry but refused to just renew their visa. There is a complete disrespect for our laws. The house has allowed this to go on for years and now they are crying about it. When 911 happened no one was saying lets keep the illegal mexicans out. It is five years later and this is now our big issue. Who says it should be? What about the americans who are here working hard, just to get by and they are being taking advantage of by the gas companies, what about my brother in law that had to return to Iraq and might never return home. I still ask where is bin laden? Please help me to keep my priorities straight. Please.

I honestly wasn't aware there was a loophole but now that I've read your article, I'm outraged. If their visas have expired, deport them, plain and simple. I mean, immigration doesn't bat an eye when they uproot Mexicans and deport them, so why not anyone else who is in the states illegally?
Wonderful article! Wow. Sent it on to some of my friends as well.
