If an undercover cop is posing as a drug dealer or prostitute or something and you ask if they're a cop, do they have to tell the truth? I've heard all kinds of answers, just kind of curious what the truth is...

the short answer is NO
When working an undercover vice operation I would never tell someone I was a cop, it would blow the cover and could have gotten me hurt. At the end of the day every officer wants to be able to go home in one piece to their families and friends.

Not true. If that was the case, there wouldn't be any undercover cops. Cops can lie to get people to rat other people out, too. No laws stipulate that cops tell the truth except when under oath...

No, that is not true. This is an old rumor that comes up when defendants believe they can get out of a criminal charge by saying the police "entrapped" them when they asked the undercover if s/he was a cop and s/he said no. It is not entrapment, and yes police can lie to you.

Yes, a police would have to identify themselves if asked that question. If not and the conversations recorded(wired) they stand a strong chance of losing their case
If the conversations not recorded, its a strong possibilty that the cops will lie in court and they would say that person never ask them if they were the police

They DO NOT have to tell you in fact they can participate in otherwise illegal behavior to make their case!!! They don't even have to come from your area they can come from other states. You will not be able to pick them out most do a real good job of the undercover thing!!

NO!!! They can and do LIE LIE LIE. Do not be fooled by the word entrapment, entrapment is when they solicit or set you up, but if you walk up to a hooker and solicit sex and then ask if she is a cop, she can say no. Then arrest you later, but if your walking down the street and a hooker walks up to you and asks you if you want sex and shes a cop, thats entrapment. Just listen to the way they talk, and don't ask for anything. Make them ask you.

That's the word on the street. But make sure you ask for a definitive answer and don't let them beat around the bush like they're so good at doing.

Definately NOT! If the one (s) being arrested are the ones asking, then... they will find out in court. After the Operation is complete.
