I was trimming my dogs nails, and accidentally cut the quick. I managed to stop the bleeding , but now i am worried that it may get infected since he loves to dig. Does anyone know if this may be a problem? what should i do?

I wouldn't wory about it. You don't need to take your dog to the vet. Cutting the quicks is very common, even vets do it. The wound heals very quickly. Since you stopped the bleeding, the clotting has already begun and a protective barrier is in place.

I accidentally cut my dogs quick as well (a few different dogs actually, since I used to have sled dogs) and she was fine. But one dog got bacterial meninjitis (not sure about the spelling) and had to be put down... But normally, the dog will be fine. Try to keep it out of mud or dirt and keep it from running a whole bunch while the quick is still unhealed. The nail should grow back fine soon. Maybe clean it off with peroxide. Hope your dog gets better soon.

Hopefully you used the blood stop powder. Id ask the vet they may recommend some glue or hardening liquid that will seal it.

Id just say don't let it out where it will dig a while. But no matter what dogs seem resistant to much more than many animals.

Do not pour peroxide on it! This will dissolve the blood which is protecting the claw.

I've never seen it carry over into an infection. Get some Quick-Stop at your local pet store and use that to stop the bleeding next time it happens. For now you could put some super glue over it to protect it. As I said though, doubt it will be a problem.

I work construction and am getting cut all the time. I use super glue to fix all my wounds. Just in case you think I'm crazy to suggest this! :)

If you dogs nails are white then you can hold a flashlight under the nail and you can see where the quick ends. However if their black its a good idea to either let the vet do it or make sure that you barely tip the nail or file them.

Call your Vet in the morning, them giving you doggie medical advice over the phone is free =) !! And until you can call the vet keep the pooch inside so it wont dig and wont worry you about it getting infection from digging.

Not sure, but i'm worried about your puppy. Maybe don't let him dig for a few days...a week, until some of the quick grows back.

clean it off with an anti bacterial spray or solution....keep an eye on it , it should be fine. keep its feet clean after it goes outside , they usually heal relatively quick. If it is a deep cut, and keeps bleeding use a product called " quick stop" it is used for puppies that have their tails cut off etc....if you don't have this use corn starch:}

Chances of infection are slight. Dogs are not as susceptible to those minor kinds of infections as humans unless for some reason they are immune supressed.
