Science Diet is NOT the best... vets recommend it because thye are PAID to do so.. vets were also PAID to endorse this food (as you will read on the lable) vets receive very little or NO training on food and ingredients and an educated person can look at the bag and tell you it is over priced crap - over priced becuase of their marketing scheme to pay vets to promote and sell this food....

shiney hair is NOT an indication of a good food - many low quality foods put extra fats into the food to give a shiney coat to fool niave pet owners who think a shiney coat means a healthy pet - it doesnt....

the ingredient list tells the truth about this food...

some blends have bad stuff like SOY, BEEF, PORK, Wheat, COrn or By-Products (beaks feet feathers - preserved with a chemical pesticide known as ethoxyquin which is linked to numerous health problems).. some even have WHEAT in them... (soy, corn, wheat, beef and pork are the leading allergins in dogs, soy causes behavior problems)

not all expensive food is good.. and some is better than others - usually its the ingredients that matter - good ingredients = less filler = less food you have to feed = less poops
Science Diet has lots of filler and is a CRAPPY OVER MARKETED OVER PRICED FOOD!!!!

That is really not a very good food. SD needs to spend less on advertising and more on their crappy food.

Iams and Eukanuba are not anything I would feed my dogs either. There are some very good nutritional articles online, do some reading and go to the feed store and study the labels.

Great dane lady - I was told the same thing by a Vet student some years ago. The nutrition class was actually an afternoon seminar given by Science Diet in the first year of school. I have gotten many blank looks from Vets when I try to talk nutrition, they generally know little or nothing about it.

I have to agree with Chetco about Canidae. I spent $26.00 on a 20# bag. I am feeding 3 dogs from that bag. one is a 96# lab/mix and the other 2 are bichons. 20# lasts me a whole month. I feed them once a day, with Iams, I was feeding them twice a day. With the Iams, I was buying 2 varieties, large breed and small breed, and I got a month out of it. Bottom line, spend more, feed less often, dogs are remaining full longer, SAVE MONEY $$$. See before the Canidae, I was spending almost $40 a month on dog kibble. Now, they are getting a balanced diet that is free from unnessary foods, such as corn. Just check out the link I included and you be the judge. SD has a 1* (star) rating, along with Iams, Eukanuba, and all purina products. If these companies spent more on making quality foods instead of advertising, their rating may go up.

p.s. my dogs like this food, Don't change your dog's kibble abruptly, introduce it to them a little at a time mixing it with their current kibble. Gradually add more each day until the transition is complete. Changing your dog's diet too quickly could have been why you had problems with the other products you tried.

Science Diet is not a good food. Vets do make a lot of money on it, just as they do on Frontline and Advantage.

Read the label. What is the first ingredient? A good food has meat as the first ingredient!

Vets only receive a few hours of nutrition training when they are in school and that is usually given by the dog food company.

I have tried Science Diet for my Chow and I had horrible results. She got really sick and puked 4 or 5 times a day! She lost a lot of weight and when I asked the vet if it could be her food, she said no. Of course she did b/c vets make money off of Science Diet. I changed her food to Kibbles n bits and out of nowhere the vomiting stopped and she's doing soo much better now!
F*** Science Diet!

I would like to say that the veterinary office I work at, and the fact that I have been a Vet. Tech for 2 yrs, we recommend Purina, science diet, Eukenuba and IVD dog foods ,because they are the best foods on the market for your animals. And most legitimate Vets. are going to make a small profit off of the food but believe it or not the price we pay for these foods is almost what we sell them for. The reason for Vets. recommending them is because the companies have spent millions on testing and hiring independent Veterinarians for their knowledge on dietary needs for animals. And some of these foods are made considered prescription diets. Like NF for kidney problems or En for sensitive digestive tracts because it is a bland diet. Just about all supermarket foods are made with lots of fat and fillers and bi products. so they can sell them cheaply and do not care .

Ok, 1. vets are not PAID to sell science diet, there are numerous prescription diets out there that vets recommend because they have different ingredients that target certain issues like diabetes, urinary problems, stomach and kidney problems, allergies, etc. they have certain ingredients or a lot of ingredients left out but still maintain the same nutritional value as far as protein and other important nutrients that the animals need. all vets mark up costs because it is so expensive to run the darn place. personally we switched from hill's science diet to purina because its cheaper and ships more often.

2. while most vets make a substantial amount of money, they went through all of the school for it also. honestly i think they are a bit underpaid. places such as banfield and corporate vet hospitals are cheaper because of they way they are run. generally vet offices are small business owners, which means their prices are going to have to be higher to cover all the costs of maintaining, supplying and fixing the office.

to Just Jess, there is IVD, which just joined with royal canin. we sell that to a few clients if the hills or purina didnt work out.

My dog has multiple allergies (I had him tested and it wasn't cheap!) so he MUST be on a limited antigen dog food. Science Diet ZD is what he's on now, after becoming sensitive to Purina Limited Antigen. Before his allergies we feed him a great dog food, Nutripet, which is made by the vitamin company, Nutrilite.

I don't know what I'll do if he becomes sensitive to the Science Diet. There aren't many limited antigen foods available.

Science Diet is bordering on one of the worst foods out there. I would rank it along with Iams, Eukanuba or Purina. It's full of fillers that the dogs do not need.

I would suggest switching to Innova, Canidae, Solid Gold, Merrick, Chicken Soup or Wellness.

My dogs hate science diet. Vets recommend them only because they make a lot of money off of them.
