You should use mousse at your roots only (about the size of a golf ball) Partially blow dry your hair and then roll it in large velco rollers at your roots. Blow dry the rest with the rollers in your hair and when you take them out you'll get volume to the max. You can buy the rollers for really cheap at Wal-Mart.
As far as the messy part goes...I love messy pony tails (don't brush it straight back....just pull it up on top of your head really loose and then pull small bits of tendrils down around your face)

If your hair is that flat, and you want a messy look anyway, don't blow dry it. Use a volumizer at the roots and let it air dry. Flip your hair upsidedown and tease it a little. Flip it back over and tousle it with your hand a little. Lightly spray it with a setting spritz (try Paul Mitchell) and just let it go natural! You'll get some volume and a messy look.

Be aware though that this looks better if you have a wave or curl to your hair. If your hair is stick straight it might not look so good. Try washing it the night before and after it's dry, braid it and sleep with the braids in. When you get up the next day, take the braids out and follow the rest of the instructions above.

Wen you blow dry your hair try blow drying it upside down, that should give it some volume or pin the top layer of your hair up and tease the layers underneath with a comb and then put ur pinned hair back down over the top of it and comb over it, you might feel resistance like knots wen u try to brush over it, but it works. As for the messy look, gels, waxes and mousse's are good for that, but not too much, you dont want to make your hair look oily

I have baby fine thin hair and I get Volume and the messy look...
First when you get it cut have them razor it , layer it and add highlights or lowlights then buy a volume shampoo....apply a root lifter before you blow dry and start at the roots and blow dry out. After it is dry use a paste to place your hair in the messy look like Redken Rough Paste.

They sell this stuff at Walmart called hair glue. That will hold your hair
Try hair moose or gel and blow dry your hair bent over that will give it a lot of lift. You could also try washing it and then braiding it tightly before you go to bed if you want waves.

ok, don't mind me if i sound crazy, but my hair goes stick straight- if i blow dry it..maybe you should try letting it air dry and then while it's doing that you can spray in some liquid gel to acheive that messed up look...i hope it works out for you..also consider the length of your hair.if my suggestion doesn't work, call a local salon for some expert advice.

you can try layering it, or when you cut your hair, go to a stylist with a picture of what you want.

To get volume- gel helps a lot. My hair is a lot like this. I heard somewhere that you should try brushing your hair out first by letting it hang over your head (put your head down..) and brush it straight down. Then, flip it back to it's normal position.. try that?

then it will have a natural messy yet hot look ;]

When I get out of the shower I towel dry my hair and use just a little bit of jell and tip my head upside down and spreed it with my fingers tips.
