Well giving back the magazine shouldn't be illegal. But giving back food can be kind of tricky, because it is time and bacteria sensitive. However, if I were the person to pick up the magazine, I would want to know that someone else and used it, because perhaps they had stolen the fragrance samples by opening them up, or perhaps that already taken the quiz. Store Owners must identify materials as pre-used. However I do think that the impulse to share is a good one and should be encouraged especially in this modern-day where we are becoming more global and resources are becoming more scarce.

Hey babes im a manager of a newsagents so i hope i can give a half decent answer!
we have a unwritten policy of if you spend more than ten minutes on a magazine we can assume you are not going to pay for it so we will go up to you and politely ask if you would like any help and that normally does the trick.
as for the illegal thing well i suggest you get a job in a newsagents as we do it all the time!
we take them home and try the disks on the PC mags we read them and bring them back!
oh and you can keep all the free gifts when it comes to returns time!
i hope that helped babes

Wouldn't it be kinder to not make the next person pay for the magazine that you already paid for?
Leave it in a coffee shop, or on a bus/subway, or in a doctor's office.
Something similar could be done with the beans as well. There are plenty of people on the planet that can't afford that magazine or those beans.
However, it choose the store route, I don't know of it being illegal. I can't readily imagine what such a crime would be called.

Crazy as it may seem, my local public library has all the magizines i want to read (People, Time, Newsweek, Readers Digest), and more (The Economist, Science Fiction Weekly, Forbes, ect). I can go read them for free any time I want, and even check out some back issues. Maybe you could try the same, rather than worry about antikleptomania, or what ever it is.
BTW: Are you a brit?

I don't know if it is illegal but I think it would mess up the store's inventory. They count how many of each thing they sell, and if you put it back, they would have one more than what the records said they sold. That would cause problems with balancing the inventory and the books, I would think. I like the idea of donating the magazine and the beans better.

Well I don't think it's illegal. A bit weird maybe. I just think your the type of person who doesn't like to waste things. You can always give stuff like magazines and books to friends or the library. Extra food and stuff can go to soup kitchens or other charitable organization. And don't forget to "leave a Penny" in that dish at the gas station.

How about giving left over tins to a charity that needs them? Giving the magazine to someone else who wanted to read it?
Why do you want to give even more money to these huge corporations?

Thats really sweet!
If the magazine was in the same condition then I don't see a problem. I doubt the shop would mind but it might be interesting trying to explain it to them!
