In modern usage, the term redneck predominantly refers to a particular stereotype of individuals living in Appalachia, the Southern United States, the Ozarks, and later the Rocky Mountain States. The word can be used either as a pejorative or as a matter of pride, depending on context.

Usage of the term "Redneck" generally differs from Hick and Hillbilly, because Rednecks reject or resist assimilation into the dominant culture, while Hicks and Hillbillies theoretically are isolated from the dominant culture. In this way, the Redneck is similar to the word Cracker.

OMG! a "Redneck" nowadays or where the term originated? I am from Arkansas, and before any goat ropin' comments, to many arkansans, today a redneck is some backwards racist who can tell you which direction the tornado came from, but the term originally referred to a hardworkin man who worked all day in the hot sun, every day, and came home with a sunburn.

If they are sitting in a circle in their living room passing around a can of spray paint and a bread bag like they r drugs...... They r definetely rednecks.
If they take a $hit in the woods and use their shirt as toilet paper, and then wash it off with a hose and put it back on........ You've encountered a redneck

Redneck has two meanings....for outsiders it mean an uneducated, loud mouthed, offensive, and usualy racist southern person from the country, or boondocks. For us southerners that dont get al pissy about it, it means a southern person who has a southern draw and knows what country is. And just for everyone out there, including you, not all southern people are uneducate, illiterate, inbred, beer guzzling slobs that just crawled out from underneath something.

My boyfriend. ( just kidding ). sort of. He was born and
raised in the country on a farm. But he is very smart.
Rednecks are people who are ignorant. Who have no
manners. And they don't want to learn anything. I can say
worse I guess, but that's it in a nutshell.

Originally factory workers who were trying to organize. When the godless union busters came in gangs to fight them in the street, the workers tied red bandannas around their necks so they could tell their friends from the enemy.

People who don't respect the common man use this term as a pejorative.

Wow what a general question that has ssooooooo many meanings! Uneducated, illiterate, poverty-induced, backwards, inbred...a variety. So I've heard described as anyway. None the less, it's meant to not be a nice name.
