I have no idea--I guess children these days think they have to grow up fast or something. But to the parents who do this--why, all this is good for is high, high bills and do they really need to communicate with people that much in junior high--- My fifteen year old wants one and he will get one once he starts driving and it will be a prepaid for emergencies and communication with me and his father after that he will have to pay for his own minutes.
It reminds me of parents who complain about how their kids dress but who buys the clothes---if you don't like it don't buy it. Parents need to get back in control of their kids.

I have younger children so I don't have to mess with that yet, but I can say that I known plenty of people with kids in junior high who have cell phones. The kids are into a lot of after-school activities and it just makes it easier on the parent to be able to communicate with them. For instance, what if a basketball practice started late and is going to end later? A mom could sit in the parking lot with two toddlers in the car. But if her son/daughter had a cell phone, the kid could call the mom and tell her that he's going to be later.

Or when you give that little bit of freedom to be "out and about" in the neighborhood but still want to be able to be in contact with your child in case of an emergency on either side.

To a junior high student a cell phone is sign of independance.

They want to be cool, just wipping out their cell phones, they think they are all that and a bag of chips. I have a cell phone since junior high, but I only use it for emergencies, and family events. I hate to talk on them. I don't know where I would be without one because I can inform my parents where I am and when to pick me up from this and such. It is a lifeline.

Good question. I guess because they think it makes them cool. Unless you drive you don't really need a cell phone. They have something called "pay phones." kids can use those to call their parents if they're out w/their friends. And if they are at their house they have something amazing called the "house phone." People in junior high really need to learn that concept.

spoiled kids; stupid parents. I see so many young kids on cell phones anymore. It's like they can't walk down the street without talking on it. And mostly it's just friends calling to say nothing at all. Have you seen the commercial with the girl talking on the cell phone for hours and hours? I think it's hilarious, but it's about the way it goes.

I don't know. I'm in junior high and have a cell phone. I lurve it. The people at my school wnt one, or have one, because they want to make people jealous. I think that's stupid. My cell phone was my golden birthday present. I really only use it for emergencys, or when my mom is trying to reach me.

because the kids are spoiled brats. i did not have a cell phone till i could pay for it. and if parents would set rules down for there kids, to always be with a adult who has a cell phone and can be trusted, or to be at a freinds house where they have a phone. and the parents need to know who there kids are hanging out with, and who there parents are. parents today just dont take enough responsabilty for there kids. kids need to know and obey common rules, not have a cell phone.

i don't think children that are in school need a cell phone--unless they have a major family situation. even in that case, they could get in touch via the school's office. cell phones were invented for serious business men and women, not as play things and popularity contests.
