Yes, by all means you can kennel train her!!! She's most likely lonely when you leave the room. Try leaving a TV or radio on so she doesn't feel so alone. My dog likes to watch Animal Planet.
Sleep with an old towel or t-shirt and put it in the kennel with her. This will comfort her by having your smell on it. Make sure she has a few toys in the kennel with her so she has something to play with or chew on. Often she'll stop whining/howling after you've been gone for a few minutes. You can also get a water bottle, similar to what you'd use for a hamster or gerbil only biger, for the kennel so she has something to drink if you're going to be gone for a while.
When you're first introducing the kennel put some treats or her favorite toy in it and encourage her to go in. Close the door for a few minutes and praise her for being a good girl. Gradually work your way up, leaving her in it for longer and longer, and leaving the room for a while. To distract her while you leave, give her some treats she has to work on like a cornstarch bone, treat ball, or a rubber toy such as a Kong filled with treats or peanutbutter.
Always make the kennel a postive place to go. For many dogs their kennel becomes thier den and a place to retreat to when they want some alone time. My mom's female dog does this all the time when my dog comes over. Leave the door to the kennel open when she doens't have to be in it so she can go in and out as she pleases.
There are several great books on kennel training available at bookstores or Petsmart. You can also ask the trainers at Petsmart for tips.

How old is the dog? All young dogs will howl and whine when left in a kennel until they get used to it. A tick-tock clock works wonders for calming young pups. If older..I am sure it probably has to do with seperation anxiety. If young make sure that you dont go back in while shes whining it only rewards the bad behavior.

Leaving the TV on is good, putting a tape in about dogs is better. When she howls after you leave the room, come back in and let her/him know in no uncertain terms that you do not like the noise. When she/he calms down, give her/him a treat for being quiet. As she/he gets the hang of it, increase the length of time in between the treats.
