Well, I assume what you mean by the "American Dream" is someday obtaining finanical independence. The answer is that it is possible for middle and lower class people to eventually achieve financial independence with the right combination of: (1) education; (2) skill and (3) some special talent. Along the way you will meet many people who don't want to accept you into the socio-economic strata that you are seeking to join, and others will embrace you. The bottom line is this: If you have a special talent that is in demand and can make other people money, you will get paid. Take the extreme examples--think of all the star NBA players who often times come from the ghetto. They have a special talent that people will pay to watch--so, they become multi-millionaires. Or, think about former Presidents Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, or Bill Clinton. All came from either middle-class or lower middle-class backgrounds. They became educated, political, and then elected to various political offices until becomming the Leader of the Free World. Also, think about the millions of people who come from middle-class or lower-class backgrounds who work their ways through college and law school or med school and eventually achieve financial independence. The examples are legion.

of course it is -when people stop risking their lives to get here then you will know it is over, but as long as you can get cheap education(community college and state university) fha or va home loans and tax free savings bonds and tax free retirement vehicles like roth ira etc.how can you say it is over.do not confuse rich and upper middle class, most people will tell you that the american dream is powered by hard work and credit not the lifestyes of the idle rich-look at the tv shows that shaped the american dream, leave it to beaver, ozzie and harriet, brady bunch.all of those shows helped shape millions of lives and none of those shows celabrated wealth, rather all had good jobs college education, military service and a monthly mortgage payment-how is that NOT ATTAINABLE
