i think it's a question that only the military should answer.

in reference to the above reply. I was in the Marines 4 years and I never knew of anyone to be a homosexual except one in bootcamp but he was booted out...and that was a good thing because he never would have made it. I'm sure there were...i just didn't know them and that's the way it should be.

I don't see why you all are getting so upset over the question...it was legitimate. I guess it has to do with all the "sensitivity" training you've received and being taught things in values assessment class that homosexuality was perfectly normal and just another choice you can make. Well some people don't feel that way. And some (probably more than you know) servicemen don't want to be around them...and they have legitimate reasons. So it isn't a question of how ok YOU ARE with homosexuals. So get offended at this answer.

This is gonna result in a lot of hate mail, but no, I don't think they should be allowed into the military. When I was in, I saw some gay people who were serving in the Marine Corps. I knew one girl who joined and she was the most hard corps Marine I knew, but she was the exception. All the gay men I knew, oh my crap, they were such flamers that you could see them from 50 miles away. They shouldn't be allowed because most military are straight. I know women tend to be more accepting of lesbians, but most guys aren't so. It seems that alot of gay guys are beat and killed for just that, being gay. If you allowed openly gay men into the military, I think there would a rise in hate crimes, you would see new levels of harassment. A gay man wouldn't be safe because the straight ones would always be wondering," Is he checking me out?" and would put them at edge. Alot of Marines wear "silkies" for P.T. and if, for whatever reason, a gay man got an erection, there would be so many problems, he'd probably be beat or harassed til he left the unit/military. The gay Marines that were in NCO ranks were not respected at all by the junior Marines, and without respect and a healthy dose of fear, you don't have good unit pride. Plus, it's bad enough when a military scandal takes place with straight people, cheating and what not, it would be twice as bad if a gay scandal broke out and there's a picture of 2 men with strap ons or whatever. That would leave people with no faith or respect in the military. As for the question if they should be asked or not, I believe the current "Don't ask, don't tell" policy deals with that and I think it's a good one. The military is not going to openly ask anyone their sexual preference and they are asking in return for military personnel to not flaunt their sexual orientation.

I don't think there is anything wrong with homosexuals in the military and I was an Army wife for 5 years. I don't think they should be asked and I don't think it should be a factor. I don't see them asking troops "Who did you have sex with last night?"
The only reason not to allow gays would be for fear of sexual relations between soldiers except we have women in the military so that reasoning is out. I think "don't ask don't tell" is a load of crap that should be done away with. Quite honestly we don't have enough troops for all the conflicts that Bush is putting us into as we stand now. We shouldn't be turning down ANY able bodied person who wants to fight we need all the help we can get.

This is a easy question to answer, the don't ask don't tell policy should be in effect for all aspects of life, A homosexual can fight just as well as anyone else. but if you really want to solve wars, and another social problem... make the army consist of the inmates in prison. Make part of thier sentence to fight for the people they hurt, the prisons system becomes less crowded, and the wars are fought by those who know how to fight.

They are there and always have been. I really like the don't ask, don't tell thing, because your sexual preferences should be kept to yourself.

The issue for heterosexual men is one of privacy to an extent. Men and women don't shower together, etc., because ultimately we will end up looking at one another in a sexual way. When same sex individuals are together in those situations, most take for granted that the other guy or gal is not looking at them in a sexual way. Gays sort of throw that balance out of whack.

Yes, just like any other American citizen, I think they should be able to be in the military. And I'm sure they already are.

And I think that asking one's sexual orientation is rude. It's kind of like me asking you what positions you and your significant other use in the bedroom. I don't care. If you do your job well, work hard, pay your bills, pay taxes on time, take care of your kids(or dog, fish or bird) then what do I care what you do with the one you love. It has nothing at all to do with your job.

So yes to the first question, and no to the second.

Asking people for their sexual preference would be wrong. Sexual preference does not affect the quality of a soldier, and can only negatively affect his relations with other soldiers. Aside of that by making public their preference you'd be placing bull's eyes on their back.

Which is not something you'd want when facing the enemy when your fighting for the same country as the rest of your army.
