Most churches use the tithe money to pay the pastor and to meet the needs of the church, like water, heat, electricity, pay the mortgage of the church, it actually functions a lot like homes. It's done a little differently in the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Tithes are sent to the general conference and divided equally among the pastors, so that there is no jealousy among the churches, for those in larger areas with churches who will naturally have more in tithe due to population surplus. The pastor's wages are paid 1/2 by the conference, and 1/2 by the churches they serve (some serve more than 1 and some in Africa serve as many as 13). The rest of the money is divided toward different ministries which the church serves. There are fairly strict guidelines concerning the nature of use in tithe in this church. It is sad that because she could not afford to pay tithe that your mother was turned down. James 1:27 states that widows and orphans should be helped in their time of trouble. It is one thing if the church is using all their tithe wisely, but instead of only turning your mother down, they should give her alternatives, or take up an offering on her behalf. I hope at the very LEAST, they prayed for her. If you could email me your mother's first name and what ails her, so that I may have a name for whom I pray for, I would appreciate it (I have my email enabled).

Unfortunetly, tithing is not Biblical. At least not how churches treat it today. Tithing refers to giving of the Lord 10% of the harvest, and also 10% in the livestock. (Tithe-food) This is an Old-Covenant requirement. Tithing was not required for the poor or a perfession in which was a skill or a craft. This is not so for the New-Covenant- which was after Christ's death. It is better to give than to receive, which is why a free-will offering is important -- but a required tithe is BOGUS, and wrong!!! Tithing is stating your trust and understanding of God. It shows your faith in him by understanding that he has given you all and could take away all. The money I make is not my money.
When you begin to understand God it makes sense. If you have no Faith in God I can see why you look at it funny and odd that God needs money. I thought the same thing not to long ago. The truth is God does not need your money it shows that you understand his basic teachings and will trust in him!
If you are serious, which I doubt...
If you feel that 5% is what is in your heart than 5% is better than 0%....if you do not want to give to a Church at all why not give to a well fund for Africa?
I am a little confused in the # of questions that are trying to ridicule Faith, God etc... If it is not of interest to you why waist your time! On the other hand maybe you are interested and are looking for answers!? Which would be a good thing!

Learning about God is way more important than worrying about finances. If you are struggling with money a having difficulty finding a church that doesn't demand that you pay them(although I have never been to a church like that) I would suggest not going to a church at all. Instead, why not try reading the bible on your own and listening to a Godly minister on the Internet such as Charles Stanley. If you decide not to tithe, no one will ever know it except you and God.

the church can not change it from 10%. Actually, God commanded it. So... there you go. Tithing by the way is not I-feel-like-giving-today" attitude. It's a commandment because it is God's. If you don't give the 10% tithes, it's like stealing something from Him. He gave you a job, money, and stuff, and he deserves the 10% out of it.

Well, if they go by what the bible says then it's 10%. You shouldn't worry about your tight budget. If you pay your tithing in full and with a good attitude, then God will bless you and make sure u have what u need.

tithing is in the old testiment say's one should give 10%, later in the new testiment tithing is better refered as grace giving, so 10% is what we should give, but in grace giving some ppl give more... like maybe 30%.... what ever you do give it with a happy heart, for your love for Christ and you will be blessed.
Either way you go God will get his tithe, basically everything we have is ours only on loan... if you are able to tithe the 10% and try to get cheap, you won't be blessed like you might otherwise and end up having to spend that money on something else.

My personal experience has been that the more I give, the more I receive in return! So while you can tithe whatever amount your heart tells you, if you look at it strictly from an economic viewpoint, your best investment is to give more!

The church did not come up with the ten percent rule. It was God that asked for Christians to give ten percent. I must say that it amazes me that Uncle Sam TAKES twenty-five percent and God only asks for ten and he's the reason you have the money in the first place. Why is this a problem.
