Stigmata have occurred in various individuals throughout history.

Of the cases investigated, many have proved to be self-inflicted. There are some cases, however, in which no medical evidence could substantiate fakery.

I think the phenomenon of stigmata may be in some cases real--in that the individual is not causing physically causing the wounds to appear. It is hard to say though whether in these cases the manifestations are brought about by mental ability or whether they are true experiences of religious devotion.

This is not to say that a person self injuring might not find in some way the act of imitating Christ's wounds also spiritual in some way.

So, it's a complex issue, but I think what is important to remember is that it is possible to have profound religious experience without manifesting physical signs as evidence.

I think that it's a false sign that doesn't glorify Christ because it makes it look like some human's blood should be a cause for celebration. It's one of the many signs that the person is caught up in a false system of worship that the Devil is confirming to the gullible.
