Most commercial airline pilots were in USAF service as fighter pilots, a very nice touch on a resume that merits higher pay status. My estimation, because pilots are in high demand, of their annual salaries would be somewhere in the $60k to $86k range.

They're desperately needed for airline business survival; the government can't just fire them all and replace them like Regan did with air traffic controllers in the 80's. For Uncle Sam to try would mean draining the U.S. active military fighter pilot resource, which would take YEARS to replenish--and at a critical stage of "war" in Iraq (and possibly North Korea, for GWB to stay in White House longer), such a move would be stupid. However, many feel that's a buzzword tacked on the GWB White House.
