The whole family is terrified. Even if he makes it through surgery and post-op, how many more years does he really have with us? I mean, he's only 55.

I've taken care of post-op open heart patients. The surgery is a serious surgery, but it's becoming (unfortunately) more common and the prognosis is generally good for this surgery. If your dad has a good surgeon and a good medical team, and if he takes REALLY good care of himself (good diet, goes to rehab, exercises, good diet, takes his medications, good diet, quit smoking, exercise, did I mention good diet) he could be around to see his grandkids. This answer's a bit simplistic since there's more obviously to staying healthy after open heart surgery, but it should help to address your fears and concerns.

I wish the best of luck and a speedy recovery for your dad.

My dad went through it. It is hard to go through, however, in the end you will be so much more happier it's done. Like a second chance. I looked at it like this: If he didn't have it done the next thing would of been a heart attack. my dad is 65 and had it in Nov 04. He is still kickin butt around the house. Less then a year later the was driving a real nascar. No lie.

Believe it or not the more bypasses (actually bypassing veins) the better b/c you know there were a lot done so they will not have to go back in later.

Don't worry, I was in the same boat as you.....horrifed but doctors do this all the time. The procedure is like anything else these days.

Good luck to your Pops!

He'll be fine.

my dad went threw it when he was 30 and hes now 53...there are always chances but the doctors are really good now a days... my mom had triple bypass almost 10 years ago and shes still alive...after surgery you really have to just watch what you eat...and listen to the doctor..it is really a scary thing, but the chances are really on his side...if it was 50 years ago i would prob tell you to be scared, but there is so much technology now, try not to worry about it...you and your family need to be there for him..the more you show him your scared the more he stressed he will be...and when you have heart trouble stress is the last thing you need...hang in there im sure everything will be fine...good luck Hun
