My kittens turned a week old on Monday. Today they were all fine. I checked on them periodically. When I went in there to check on them one time, one of the kittens was barely moving and breathing. It died within a few minutes. The momma cat was with my mom in the front room when this was going on. What could have made the baby kitten just die suddenly when an hour before that she was fine.

I feel like it is something that I did. I tried to make sure that they all ate about the same amount. She had 5, so I know that it was crowded. This has never happened to me before. I had another cat that had 2 litters of kittens and they were all fine. I worried about this cat having kittens because she was a very small cat before she got pregnant, and she again is very small. How can you tell if she is producing enough milk? Thank you so much!!

It was probably not feeling well before but you just didn't think it was sick, since most of the time kittens sleep or eat at this age. Or maybe the mother had mashed it or something when she was in with the kitties.

That happens a lot with kittens. Any animals really, but I've noticed it more with kittens. Sometimes there is a birth defect or it's just not getting enough to eat with the others around.. I've had a few cats that died from internal birth defects. Cats are just weird like that. The cat I have now is the only one I've had that's lived longer than a year and she was a stray.. go figure. :)

The other kittens ok? Could be kitty distemper, I would have the others check asap..

But sometimes there are things wrong with the babies we cannot see and they just die. I lost a puppy at 2 weeks who seemed just fine the day before...

Sorry about the kitten.. I know it is sad..

This happens quite frequently. Sometimes they are born with a defect that doesn't show up right away or,if there are many kittens or the mother is not producing enough milk, it was maybe too weak to fight it's way in there for a teat to suckle on.
My condolences, it's always hard to watch a baby kitten dying.

Unfortunately this happens allot. There is almost always a runt in the litter, some times the smallest, weakest one does not survive. I'm sure the kitten dying was not your fault. I'm very sorry about the kitten. Good luck and God bless.

She could have been born with something wrong with her, that you couldn't have known about. I have had tiny baby kitties die in my hands. It's not fun, but it happens. For some reason they're just not strong enough to survive. Sorry.
