While some religions ecourage pulicly displaying your faith others believe that it should be done privately. I do not think there is anything inherently offensive about prayer in public. You can express or flaunt your religion however you want. That is a matter of personal choice that really does not affect anyone else. I do not see the relationship between that and masturbation. Public masturbation is entirely inappropriate and could be contrued as sexual assault or indecent exposure depending on the context and the company. I really don't see a correllation between the two issues.

Jesus actually does instruct us to pray in secret. But that is hyperbole, the message is do not pray for show. Communal prayer is an ancient tradition of the Church.
Prayer is not as much of a private act as you think. God has a communal as well as individual relationship with us.

Public prayer is the ultimate act of selfishness, and forces people to look at something you should keep to yourself. So is masterbation, unfortunately there are laws against one and not the other. Personally I don't think kids should be subjected to displays of either. Of course when religion suddenly comes to mean Christianity then it's proven I'm in the minority.

Why would you group those two activities together? I believe prayer can be done in public.

I think they should both be done totally in private, but only at the same time. In fact, I have been known to pray during sex on most occasions...at least I have heard myself saying, "OH, Jesus!" If that ain't givin' thanks, I have no idea what is.

I think you are 100% correct. Its a private thing that others do not need to see and be witness to.
