B/c there are some bible verses that people took out of context and used to make what they were doing OK. For instance Ephesians 6:5. God never said go out and get slaves to do your work. He did command that if you have a slave treat them well and that slaves were to obey their masters. Slavery in those days was not like it was here in America. The slaves in the bible were either indentured servants or people who were working off their debts. They were not mass forced labor.

The slavery the bible talks of is not the slavery that happened here in this country! I see two types of slavery the bible talks of one is the slavery of the Hebrews because they were poor and in foreign lands the other has to do with paying a debt, many times people could not pay a debt so they "sold themselves" to the one they owed.

Slavery and war were the ways of life in Ancient Hebrew times. Modern man makes such a big deal about slavery, but they don't mention endless wars that are slaughtering thousands of innocent people.

Find me the chapter and verse instructions where God says that slavery is wrong, where he calls it evil, detestable, or an abomination, or where he says, "Thou shalt not own slaves." I have asked Christians this numerous times and they cannot do it. Those verses do not exist.

If you read the laws of Moses, instructions are given on how to treat slaves, including one which says that it's okay to beat your slave as long as he is able to get up and walk around after a few days. Jesus calls his followers slaves, an obvious endorsement of the whole concept. Oddly enough, his followers are happy to be slaves, while simultaneously claiming that they have "free will." Slaves have no will of their own, they are required only to obey. BibleGod has no patience for people who want the freedom to think for themselves.

The countries in Europe which were most ardently christian during 1600-1800 were also the most imperialist, invading the Americas to set up their plantations: England, France, Portugal, Spain. It was these people who bought or kidnapped people and then transported them to the Americas under the argument that "god helps those who help themselves".

Interestingly the countries in Europe which were sea-faring nations but of a freethought and atheistic bent - the Netherlands, Denmark, and Belgium - DID NOT partake in the slave trade.

Slavery was much different then compared to what happened in this country. Then, it was a way for someone who is having financial problems to work off debts.

EASY! They wanted to "convert" any "savage" population. If you didn't submit to their domination and rule, you were just inslaved and made to submit anyway!
