It would certainly straighten out a lot of discipline problems. It only takes one kid getting spanked and word gets around. There have to be two adults present for a child to be spanked, it's not a private affair between the child and principal (or disciplinarian). I've heard of it being done in the hall, in front of whoever is walking by at the time. Witness everywhere and the kid will likely not ever mess up again. The whole issue of damaging self esteem in such instances should go out the window...what about when the kid messes up (from never having to "behave" because of no consequences) when he or she is older at a job and gets fired? Self esteem issues come up then...should they not have some experience dealing with such things before it could affect them in a greater capacity?

Put them back? A lot of schools still have spankings.

I'm against it, though.

(1) The principals, deans, and teachers often don't know which kid did what.

(2) Even though spanking was VERY common in the schools I attended as a child, the schools were still TOTALLY OUT OF CONTROL. So I have to say it doesn't help.

You know what does help? Suspension (in-school or out-of-school). I was always so relieved and felt such a sense of peace when the worst kids were suspended for 5 or 10 days.

I feel that there needs to be more of a serious punishment for misbehaved kids but spanking is not the answer. Today children lack the respect for adults and we as adults have not given them reason to respect us. Parents, teachers, preachers, and others have proven in the news to be abusive towards kids. We as adults need to become responsible and show them the proper way to behave in all situations. So the next time some one cuts you off, don't flip them off or act crazy. Look what you just taught a child to do. Simple example. Kids are everywhere watching.

absolutely not! we are so past the cave man age for this kind of CRAP! we would so be moving backwards.. your wife and mother in law are just stuck in the mentality that that would control some of the problems in the schools today...

It is probably your mother in law thinking it and your wife going along with it....

I would imagine if your wife thought about it sensibly she would disagree as well as you do.

I think if a teacher or any staff member's not doing their job properly they should just be fired. Spankings kind' harsh. and would set a bad example to our kids.
And in todays atmosphere they would probably sue the system.
It would just be better to pay them off and let them go.

No, I dont believe that we should have spankings at school. It is the responsibiliity of parents to teach their children respect for teachers and to listen to them. Unfortunately, parents became more and more dependent on teachers to teach these qualities to their kids instead taking up their own responsibility.

Yes, but they should only be during parent / teacher conferences. Teachers should be able to pummel the parents who chose to have children and pawn the parenting and discipline off on the school system. This would work great, but as we all know, those are the parents who don't show up to conferences. They only make noise when it is convenient for them.

No way! Stressed out and over-worked teachers don't need to have that added responsibility. Besides, I wouldn't want ANY stranger spanking my kid.
