I already have a 2 yr old Shepard-greyhound mix (i believe-adopted). She's a medium sized dog, so I'm looking for small-medium size dog as a playmate. I don't have much room- I live in a two bedroom apratment, which is big for being an apartment. I'm having trouble deciding, my dog is friendly, playful, and always looking for something to get into, which is why I need a dog that will help keep both of them involved.

The problem is I'm wanting a dog that can keep up with my dog. My dog I have now is approx. 50 lb. I'm not looking for anything under 25, because she might hurt it she still acts like a puppy.) I'm definitely looking to adopt, but I was just wondering if anyone had a suggestion about which breed I should look for.

Go to some of the adoption events and fairs in your area. Get another rescue dog! Take your girl with you and see who she picks!

Before deciding on a breed (mixed or pure), you may want to have your current dog's temperment tested. Some dogs can't get along with others--possessive of owner, of territory, loners, etc. You wouldn't want to bring in an older dog that will want to rest more rather than play. Also, I have a rescued pure-bred greyhound. She's a great dog and I wouldn't give her up for the world. When I got her I had to make sure she was cat-friendly. I know you don't have one, but you want to be sure a real small dog wouldn't bring out the hunting/herding instinct in your dog. The little guy could get seriously hurt.

Even a 2-bedroom apt. is small for two dogs. Have you checked out obedience training? Post a question on how people have resolved their problems with dogs being left alone. I have one friend who works all day--she hires a college age kid to walk and play with the dog in the middle of the day. Another friend made a video of herself and her family talking to the dog with music and household noise in the background. She runs this while she's away from the house and the dog seems intrigued enough to be good. You don't want to resort to having to crate the dog up.

Good luck.

Since you plan to adopt a dog for your dog why don't you let your dog choose?
Call the local pound and explain your situation and find out if they've a run where your dog can meet and play with one or two dogs you've picked as potential friends for her. It'll become apparent within a few minutes which dog yours favors and it'll save you alot of time and effort knowing they'll get along from the start.

I hear ya, My wife and I had the same problem. So I would suggest a Lab mix. We live in a two room apartment as well. We were crazy enough to get three labs...lol, ones a Lab-mix but he's kinda medium size.

i love siberian huskies but for you it might not be the best breed because they need to be walked at least once a day and weigh up to like 85 pounds or something and i think they are considered a medium/large breed. but they dont need that much food! they dont need as much food as other dogs the same size as them. i didnt really help but just to let you know siberian huskies are the best breed. they rock!

Whatever breed you choose, don't get another female. Get a male and have him fixed. We are learning the hard way. We have three female dogs; the older one is losing her place as pack leader and the other two have been picking on her. It's natural, we've been told. But, now we have to keep them separated.

Go on to petfinder.com. Find a dog that is in a foster home, so they will be able to tell you whether the dog gets along w/ other dogs or not, and other behavioral observations.

Look for Shih Tzu or a Cocker Spaniel. Although, your safest bet is a Shih Tzu, they are sweet, highly disciplined and can easily be trained. A Cocker Spaniel tend to be a bit stubborn at times. :)
