Wow. Amazing how Christians can do anything from flat-out deny authorization of slavery to say "some things can be confusing" or say that it wasn't really intended that way, or it was part of the culture, or whatever, but when it comes to homosexuality nobody has ANY trouble interpreting those verses.

Because man's culture was still very primitive in the Old Testament and Hebrews took it upon themselves as a cultural institution and configured it into what God told them about taking care of their possessions. The only thing that made slavery appalling, was when mistreatment occurred. Otherwise, they were pretty much like butlers and maids and gardeners today except they paid in food and shelter rather than a paycheck.

It's not an authorization. He allowed it, and a few other things, out of the "hardness of men's hearts." What you see in that passage are limitations on slavery.
Slavery is also a figure of what sin does to us. It was abhorrent enough that He sent His Son to free us.

um it dosen't... leviticus 25:44 says "no matter what you have done I am still the lord your god and I will never completely rejecct you or become absolutely discusted with you there in the land of your emenies"
I know it says something about slaves soemwere in the book though and it is because God did not write it humans on earth that had slaves did and the people writing it had to makesure they could be covered under the laws they said their god gave them

Those who find themselves as slaves... well, God hates them. It was actually explained to me this way.
Good question though, the Christians get roused up pretty easilly. The varitey in answers shows there is still inconsistency in the religion. Oh and I love the ignorance!

Things changed after Jesus died on the cross and then rose again to save us from sin. Start reading in the new testament, I know somethings can be confusing but trust the LORD and ask him to help you understand. The most important thing is that you know Jesus personally and you believe that he died and rose to life just for you!

Leviticus is a ridiculous book anyway. I am damned to hell because I am wearing woolen socks, cotton T shirt, jeans & leather boots according to that part of the bible. Bloody stupid.
Neider, we have our own inspiration, ridiculing people like you

God permitted them to own slaves in that time because that was part of their culture. He did put limitations on it and gave guidelines for it as well. In the New Testament He tells us that we are all free in Christ.

That silly Old Testament God authorized rape, child abuse and murder, genocide you name it. He is a judgmental fantasy god. He bears no resemblance at all to the real unconditionally loving God.

Do you just read parts of the Bible that you feel isn't correct? Have you read the whole thing? The Bible was written many years ago.
