What is that extra flap of skin on all dogs ears for?

This is a really great Question. I've been fooling with dogs since 1946 and do not believe I have ever heard it asked before.I used do do a lot of ear cropping and always removed it .,never bothered the ear.An educated guess is that it is simply an evolutionary characteristic.

which flap? They are designed that way to optimize the use for the dog. some just make it bendy, some are protection,(wind, rain, etc) some help with hearing...

I think it helps them hear better. I think we used to have one too but now it is our ear lobe.
