I think a black dress with maybe a satin belt in either magenta or bright orange would be very nice and elegant. If you're going for a formal wedding with black tie then black bridesmaids dresses would be fine but do SOMETHING to them besides just having a plain old black dress. I do like the idea of your bridesmaids being able to wear those dresses again, which I am sure they would like as well.

I think it would be fine. It's becoming more common to have black bridesmaids dresses... it's also a big favor to them if you let them pick the dress! You could brighten it up with the flowers in your colors, of course. You could also consider a magenta or bright orange sash around the BMs waists. If you check out the Black Bridesmaids Dresses bio on the Knot, there are some pictures that might give you some ideas.

When my daughter got married her bridesmaids dresses were black, and although I had a slight problem with that (funeral idea), it turned out very nicely! They looked so elegant in the photos and not only that, the dress was a style they could use again for another formal occasion and they wouldn't look like a "bridesmaid" dress. I'm sure your bridesmaids would look great if you wanted to go with a black dress for them. And any accent color you choose would work!

I feel that black bridesmaid dresses are very classy and elegant, as long as your wedding ceremony is in the late afternoon-early evening. There are many pros to black dresses - especially because black is usually flattering on all body types. I have been watching a lot of wedding shows, and many high profile weddings use black bridesmaids dresses, and again they are extremely elegant. I would definitely incorporate black bridesmaid dresses into my wedding and I actually am in my own wedding this year.

I was at a wedding with black bridesmaids dresses carrying white flowers and it was quite stunning. While you are right, it is non-traditinal, black and black and white was quite popular a few years back. The only question I would have is if it would be good in August, which is usually a very hot month. A soft orange - kind of dreamcicle orange would be pretty. But, hey, this is your day - it's whatever you want.

That's kinda funny, because I had black and white for my wedding colors. My Bridesmaids wore black dresses with a touch of white. Simple, but elegant. My flower girls wore white dresses with black sashes around their waists. My groom and grooms men wore black suits, black shirts with white ties. and black and white vests. Their shoes were those black and white ones, I can't think of what they are called????
But anyway, it looked really nice and my flowers were those orange roses with the fire red tips.
So I don't know if that helps, but I thought my wedding was simple, but elegant.
Honestly, you should do what you want because when I was choosing everything(especially the Black) I had a lot of people tell me I should do a different color. That is what I wanted though and since it was my wedding I did it regardless of what others thought. The day of the wedding I had a lot of those same people tell me how everything came together was beautiful and they were very surprised.
Do what YOU want after all it is YOUR wedding.

Magenta would be cool. However, it is your day, your ceremony....you do what YOU(and/or future hubby) would want to do. If you are a non-traditional kinda woman, than go non-traditional. Or, ask your bridesmaids their opinion. Or, how 'bout this: Have a bridesmaid wear black, another magenta, another bright orange...if more than 3, equal it out. Now, THAT would be different and very cool!

Black is very elegant. Bridesmaids dresses are very different than funeral dresses, there's no problems there. At my wedding (Feb) my bridesmaids wore black and my MOH wore plum, at my sister's wedding next week, the bridesmaids are wearing black tea length dresses and I (MOH) am wearing a red tea length. Black is the one color that looks good on everyone too!
