My dachshunds are tiny and don't shed. They have great personalities (they love to play and cuddle) and are wonderful with my 10 month old baby.

My first recommendation is always your local animal shelter. You can call your local ASPCA and/or the Humane Society. Those are not only ways to find a dog without spending a fortune, but you will be saving a sweet animal who needs a home. No better deal than that!

If you cannot find one that you like at the shelter, start by looking in the paper or online. You could also check the vets office and see if they know anyone who might have a dog.

As far as breeds, there are many small mixed breeds with short hair. As long as you groom them regurlary and provide proper nutrition, shedding should not be a problem.

Whatever you decide to do, make sure you let your son spend some time with the dog, make sure you teach your son how to treat the dog so they are both happy.

your best bet would be a short haired mutt from the local shelter my personal experience has taught me that mutts have a better temper and are better with small children short haired dogs also do not shed as much and when they do the hair is less noticeable and easier to clean up. a puppy is an excellent idea because the age difference isnt a huge gap your son and the puppy will be in their playful stages of life at the same time. if you want the dog to grow up to be a small dog then just ask the people at the shelter what breeds the dog has in it. but personally i would choose a larger puppy to compare to your sons size so that while playing he would be less likely to accidentally hurt the puppy. also when the puppy is old enough go ahead and get it fixed usually animals that have been spayed or neutered are less tempermental especially when they begin to mature. i hope this helped you make a good decision!

I would recommend a Bichon Frise. They are wonderful small, non shedding dogs. They are considered "hypo-allergenic" dogs, even though people will tell you there is no such thing. But from my experience with severe animal allergies and my children's asthma, they are the best. They sleep in our beds and we have no problems with our allergies and asthma. My vet personally recommends them for people with allergies.

The Bichon should weigh no more than 16 lbs and stand no more than 11 inches from floor to shoulder. A visual reference is the size of your bed pillow. They are lap dogs and pillow stealers. They are protective of their family and have wonderful temperments and quite intelligent. They are not prone to any particular disease also. They should live about 10-13 years.

You will have to elaborate on what your idea of a fortune is for a price. I would not get any dog from a pet store. You should be able to see the parents and the breeder should be knowledgeable about the breed and lineage of the pup.

I would really think twice before getting a pet for a child that age. I have seen little kids hit and mistreat animals in such horrible ways it's not fair to the animal. Unless you are planning on taking complete responsibility for it and be prepared to keep it even if your son doesn't like it then get it. Dogs are a lot of work. They have to go to the bathroom all the time, they need to be walked twice a day, and when you walk them you have to pick up the poop, otherwise you could get a fine. Please don't do anything that could put the dog in harm and have it end up in a shelter or worse the pound.

Llasa Apso's are small and dont shed...but their hair grows really long.

They are companion dogs so you have to make sure someone is always at home with the dog.

But be sure this is something that you really really want to do.
Besides the incredibly high cost of vetinary care nowadays, that dog is going to get older. Your boy may not want to have anything to do with a "Sissy" dog, and you will be stuck caring for it.

Any small dog that doesn't shed will cost alot. I have a lhasopoo that is tiny and doesn't shed. Luckily my sister in law bred him so we got him for $300 rather than $700, but then again she is a con, so you may find one...Good luck to you

I have a darling Malti-Poo, mom is toy poodle, dad maltese. He is 8 lbs, dark very soft hair, not fur. Does not shed, no allergies from this dog, since he has hair. LOVES kids, licks everyone. Very smart, you need at least a small yard, they like to run fast. Need attention, but best dog I every had and soooo cute!

Miniature Schnouzers are great with kids and they do not shed. They are also very good for people with pet allergies. They do not get very large but they are not super little either. A good size for an inside dog.
