From my experience, the reason tile looks better on a diagonal is you don't see size variations between tile when you view it at an angle. Plus it also can hide humps or dips in the floor.
And it isn't that much more difficult to install, in fact in some cases you use a border to guarantee you don't have small pieces. I can usually use my scoring board to cut the tile. What i do is score it, put a pencil on the floor and break the tile over the pencil, don't need to use the wet saw. Of course, that's cuts under baseboard.
When you lay it out figure the diagonal of the tile and divide it half that should tell you if have decent size cuts against walls.
It is a bit more difficult, but once you get used to it, diagonal patterns are worth the extra effort.

when tiles are set on a diagonal, your focal point is on the entire room rather than on straight lines. If it is a long or narrow area, and you're sitting at your kitchen table having coffee in the morning, you can stare at the floor and go crazy looking down these long lines in the floor and you'll notice every tile that isn't perfectly aligned with the others. That point of view gets shifted when you have it on a diagonal.

if you're installing the tile yourself, lay a couple of pieces out in the different ways you think you might want to install it. My mom tried a million different tile layouts from a kind of layered straight line, to just straight, and diagonal. She stuck with diagonal. It *was* more work, but it looks really nice.

Yes. If your room is narrow or small dimensioned you will want to place the tile diamond. It gives a larger illusion to the room.
If the room is standard or large, the straight look does not draw your eye to the floor as much and you will focus on the walls and decor.
Be careful that your grout color does not overpower the tile color. You don't want the grout to be noticeable in most cases.

Diagonal looks contemporary, modern casual. Straight looks traditional, formal. Diagonal may make it harder to arrange furniture. Area rugs are easier to place on straight tiles. Consider using tiles of different sizes to make a pattern. Go to www.daltile.com to view various rooms.

I think the diagonal looks best in a long galley-like room such as a bathroom or kitchen. It carries the eye down and tricks it into thinking the room is longer than it actually is. Also with these rooms you have a lot of straight cabinet and tub lines so it helps break it up.
