The bad ones shouldn't exist... The good ones should be everywhere! I love Pits. (I hate what people have done to the breed.) Every one that I have met has been a big baby, even around my small children. There are a lot of breeds that I trust less...
It's always good to hear of a Pit with a loving home. Thank you!
Edit: People, it's not just Pits that attack people, it has just been so senstionalized that those are the ones you hear about the most. I've been bitten by terriers, chihuahuas, chows, collies, dalmatians, and weiner dogs, but *never* by a Pit or a Rottie.

I love Pit Bulls. I love almost all of the Bully breeds, especially Bull Terriers. The only thing is that the wrong people have used them for unscrupulous reasons. Sure they might be used for fighting purposes, but not every Pit Bull is like that. They must first be trained to fight. Their owners beat them and starve them for days on end to create the dog you hear about on TV and the papers. If from a reputable breeder, they are the most loyal and loving dogs ever. Even some from fighting beginnings become the best family pets, living alongside children, and other pets peacefully. I read on Dog Fancy about a Staffordshire Bull Terrier (I might be wrong about the exact breed since it's been a while since I read it) who was a therapy dog. He comforted a boy in his last minutes dying from cancer. Then on their way out, a stereotypical woman screamed "Get that beast out of here! There are children here!" The children were the reason the dog was there. He comforts children who are sick from disease and illnesses. You don't hear about these representatives of their breed though. They are deemed "uninteresting" to the newspapers. They only feature the representatives who've chewed a child's face off because that's what sells papers. They think that those types of stories are the only ones that people will want to read. You don't ever hear of the Chihuahuas who've attacked a man though. Those aren't "interesting". I read the story about the pack of Chihuahuas who attacked a post officer on my PeoplePC home page. I wouldn't have heard it otherwise though.

American Pit Bull Terriers (and the related breeds, the American Staffordshire Terrier, which some would consider a form of the APBT and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier), are about the best dogs you can have. As a volunteer for my local shelter, I have been working with this breed for eight years now and I have never had a single problem with these dogs. Even the ones who have been horribly abused still want to give me kisses and want to be hugged, while their whip-like tails wag nonstop. It's a damn shame this stupid province orders them to be muzzled, especially since most of these dogs aren't the least bit threatening!
More pit bulls have helped people than harmed them. Alaska's first hearing ear dog was a pit bull, and in a Californian flood, it was a pit bull that saved the lives of several people and animals. It was a pit bull that heled the feds seize 3,075 pounds of cocaine, and it was a pit bull who saved the life of a woman when she had a dangerous reaction to a spiderbite.

I worked as a veterinary technician for 12 years and ran my own pet sitting business for 7 years and have treated and cared for many pit bulls. I think they are great dogs, and have NEVER had any problems with them. They are actually really sweet, lovable dogs. Unfortunately they are tough looking, so the wrong type of people adopt them and make them vicious...giving them the bad rep. ANY breed of dog can be vicious! Also, the news loves to report when someone is attacked by a pit bull....people get attacked by dogs everyday....but we never hear about those attacks...only if it is a fierce looking dog like a pit or a rottweiler. I never see any news stories about chihuahua attacks...believe me...they can be more vicious than pits! It is all about the owners...not the dogs. With the right training and dicipline...any dog can make a great pet...no matter what the breed.

I've had the privilege raising pit bulls in the past. My children (ages 22, 20) were brought up from the time they were crawling around pit bulls. I've never had any problems with them and love them as a wonderful companion and family member.
You can have problems with any dog. My neighbor has a chihuahua and that dog bites and tries to draw blood every time you walk past his house. No, he's not big enough to eat anyone but, his bites can infect and cause problems.
So long as you give your dog attention, food, water, training, housing, understanding....and of course, discipline...I see no reason why you should have any problems.
Enjoy your new family member!

I think they are great as long as they are raised well and lovingly. Also, their breeding may be a factor since they have been bred as fighting dogs. If they are trained to fight and made mean, however, they can be very dangerous.
You know what really kills me? The city of Denver, Colorado has banned them and if you keep one in the city, they will pick it up and kill it. That really seems like overkill (no pun intended there) and unfair to both the dogs and their owners. There has to be a better way to deal with the problem of Pit Bull attacks. By the way, that is a real problem. It's a case of bad and/.or irresponsible Pit Bull owners screwing up things for the good ones like you.

Okay lets put it this way. I have grown up around Pitbulls since i was 5 and i have never been bitten by one. I trust pitbulls over doberman's rotwilers's and German Shepards anyday. True pitbulls were originally bred for fighting but that does not mean that they are evil. it is a fact that a dog will react to the way that you treat it. if you train the dog to be vicious then thats what its going to be. but if you take a loving family and give them anybreed of dog the dog will be happy and the only time it may bite someone is if someone threatens its pack (family). dogs look to us humans like we are the leaders of their pack and they react the way they are trained to act. so i dont care what anyone says I love Pitbulls and no one can ever change that. I hope that rez lives a long and full life and i can tell that you will treat the dog how it should be treated not condemn it for being what it is. Kudos to you

Every dog is what you raise it to be. I grew up with pit bulls, that we kept to work with herding dogs. They were tough, yes, but with us they were love able, sweet companions. The stereotype people give them is just as bad as saying all African Americans are thugs or all Germans are in favor of Hitler. Brush those comments off. If you do purchase one, find a breeder who raises family pets, not a fighter. And remember you will be bringing home a football player, not a ballet dancer. Best of luck

Listen... I work in an animal shelter and we have about six Pitts (use to have about 10). They can be the most misunderstood breeds ever. I have answered a similar question a few days ago.
We had one female Pitt come in that wanted to rip apart anyone that stood in the way. After a few months of behavioral training you can now hand feed this dog and get a kiss afterwards.
So as long as you train her right and keep her friendly...Who in the world gives a crap what people say about your wittle angle.

I agree--it's sad that some ppl maintain Pit Bulls should be completely illegal to own. One of my brothers-in-law thinks they should all be put down, which is outrageous! My other brother-in-law has a PB puppy with a very sweet disposition. The kid has done his research though and knows PBs are a challenging breed and he will have to be strict and 100% consistent in his training. Unfortunately, a lot of ignorant &/or depraved ppl have been attracted to PBs for all the wrong reasons, just another instance of humans blaming animals for OUR PROBLEMS.
