BCs are very high energy working dogs! Sounds like yours are bored and need a job! BCs are great at flyball, agility, and obedience.

To the posters who say Hounds are barky - Scenthounds yes, but Sighthounds are the quietest group of dogs there is! If they bark there is usually a reason.

Hounds bark a lot, some toys bark a lot, and herding dogs (like a border collie) bark a lot if they don't have anything to do, they bark from boredom. Herders either need a job, or LOTS (and I mean LOTS) of exercise, or they will become destructive, barkers or both. Do they get a few long walks a day, or lots of running time in a fenced yard? If you keep them busy, they usually calm down. They don't really make good pets for apartment people or people who don't have lots of time to work with them. That's why you always see Border Collies excelling at agility or obedience; the training & work focuses their need to DO.

The border collies need a lot of stimulation, exercise, etc. They are working dogs and get very bored if they have nothing to do. Maybe do some agility training with them, play frisbee with them, etc. I think you will find that they are calmer.

Chihuahuas bark a lot, but they make up for that quirky trait by being the most loveable, loving and loyal dog in the world.

Collies, shellties, all of those are barkers. Hounds and beagles are known for it too. Try an electronic bark collar.

Electronic collars prevent barking in a safe and humane way. Collars respond to the vibrations of a dog's vocal cords when it barks. The collars stop barking dogs by emitting a mild correction. If the dog doesn't stop barking, it will receive a second, slightly more intense correction. The corrections, which are annoying but harmless, will eventually prevent barking in all but necessary situations; you will stop dogs who bark at everything and nothing.

Border Collies are one of the smartest dogs out there. If you don't provide them with enough exersize and enough to do (like 10-12hrof running herd on sheep) they go crazy. Literally.
I've heard of them eating Sheet Rock and fences, they destroy anything not made of metal. They can start biting and chewing holes in themselves, and they bark, continuously.
Look up "fly ball" and agility training in your area, it on the internet. Those dogs are bored and will at least continue with this behavior, or they may get worse. Please do something with them or find them a different home.

Beagles bark alot....have not really heard about border collies being barkers, most of the ones I know are hyper but fairly quiet.

My experience is that chihuahuas bark more than any other breed. Maybe there is something in the neighborhood that is bothering your collies?

How many of you who say chihuahuas bark a lot have actually owned a chihuahua???? Chihuahuas DO NOT bark a lot.

On the contrary, shepards, hounds, beagles, yorkies, and labradors are quite vocal.

It seems to be the little ankle biters (small breed dogs) that bark a lot!
