I have a pitbull terrier. I have found that I am very selfish with my dog. So much to the point that I do not want to mate her. I could make a lot of money, but I do not want to see her all blown up. I definately do not want the after effects of having puppies. So do you think that is crazy? What would you do? Inquiring minds want to know.

You do not have to allow her to have puppies. Just get her 'fixed' and you won't have to worry about it.

Keep in mind that puppies need to stay with their mother for 8 weeks (no less) and if you do not want the after effects of having puppies then you should not mate your dog. The amount of money you can make should not matter unless that is why you have a pitbull terrier. I own an English Bulldog and could also make a lot of money from selling puppies but my dog is a pet/family member and we decided against mating for health reasons. The choice is yours but make sure you are doing it for the right reasons not for the money.

Unless you plan to show the dog and put titles on her in the ring to prove you are interested in more than just the cash then I wouldn't think that breeding her is a good idea. Better idea is to take her (if you haven't already) train her well for competitions and enjoy your pup as she is. Breeding is not something to be taken lightly and should only be done to further the breed. Beside you need to consider the veterinarian cost of monitoring the pregnancy and caring for the pups until they are old enough to be placed and what if God forbid your dog ends up having a problem while pregnant or delivering and she dies? That too would be tragic.

Make alot of money???

Ha! Not if you are doing it well!

Dog show fees, hotel, gas
Cardiac, CERF, and BAER testing (and HD for your breed)
High quality kibble, toys, Vet care
Stud fees
Hotel, gas to get to the chosen boy, or even worse, an AI
Puppy kibble, Vet care

This does not even take into account possible unforseen expenses! Not to mention the hours and hours showing, training, breeding, whelping, feeding, and sitting up nights with a sick dog or puppy.

Yup, spend your life taking care of your loved dogs and be poorer because of it. That is a little more realistic picture of a good breeder.

Of course, if you just want to be yet another crappy breeder you probably could make a few bucks.

Get her spayed right away. It's not true that a dog should have a litter of puppies first. She'll be happier and healthier if she's fixed. Letting a dog come into heat over and over can cause ovarian cysts and breeding them causes more puppies in a world already overpopulated with dogs that are in need of homes.

If you dont want to mate her by all means do not. There is no real benifit to her - in fact if anything females who have had pups have been known on occasion to become more agressive both to people & dogs. Then there is the other problem which hasnt been mentioned- you fall in love with the pups and worry over them. Even if you bring yourself to part with them, you worry over them in their new homes. I personally know of 2 breeders who have gotten up in the middle of the night to drive several hours to retrieve one of there pups out of trouble years after they left home. The number of breeders who have had a dog come back is leagon for they are many. What if they are old- trained for agression ect?
BIg responsibility - if you dont feel up to it much better to not take it

Shelters are swarming with pitbill terrier puppies...please don't add to the problem. Get your dog spayed now...the only thing she'll miss out on by not having pups is dangling nipples.

By the way, some dogs become agressive towards other dogs after having pups.

get her spayed...there are too many unwanted dogs in this world already...especially pitbull terriers, they are very hard to adopt out, they have a very bad rep, even though I think they are really sweet dogs, most other people don't. My local pound is full of pitbulls that no one wants. They used to automatically put them to sleep, but now they changed their policy and at least TRY to adopt them out first. Don't create more pitbulls....give the guys that already exist a chance to be adopted.

If you don't want to "see her all blown up" because you feel compassion for her, then more power to ya'!!! It's great that you can over-look your want for personal gain in order to be considerate of what's best for your dog. However, if you don't want to "see her all blown up" because you are weird and don't like looking at unattractive objects, then: WHY DO YOU HAVE A DOG!!!! Anyway, I hope you're asking about my first assumption, because That Would Be a Good Thing!

Y not fix the dog? I love dogs, and I would breed my female dog just once. let her be a mother, she is an anaimal from nature. Find some to sucker in and make them help u with the sweet adorable puppies. Who can say no to that? I couldnt!! What u decide to do is ur choice.

I know that having a litter will bring you some cash, but what if you don't sell them all? Plus, there are so many unwanted litters already. If you don't want to deal with her being pregnant, then spay her. I think that is a better idea than breeding for money anyway!
