In truth? It's rare. Most do not include that feature, but as some have stated, it does exist, particularly with those outer plastic covers some pull stations have around them. (See link below)
I would think cameras would be far more likely to identify the person in the event of a false alarm.
I have been designing and installing fire alarms and suppression systems for over 15 years. In that time I have never had someone ask me to equip the pull stations with tamper dye, but the technology does exist. I would suspect it most where nuisance fire alarms are a problem.
Good question! You made me research that one!

This is true.... although 99.9% of the fire alarms out there do not have this feature. (why pay the extra money for it??)
But you're slightly incorrect on how it works...
Most fire alarms (the small red boxy ones) rely upon you breaking a small piece of glass or plastic in order to pull the handle down. Some of these pieces of plastic are actually hollow and contain a clear powder. When you pull the handle down and the glass/plastic breaks, the powder flies everwhere and you get some on your hands. The powder will glow under a black light.
Now remember, most states do have laws against this, and it's usually covered under the disorderly conduct section. (Some states/local governments do have sections that specifically call out pulling a fire alarm when no emergency/fire is present)... SO DON'T DO IT UNLESS YOU REALLY NEED TO!

No, it is not true, however the signal can be tracked, and with the prevalence of cameras in most buildings that have fire alarm boxes, it is likely that anyone pulling an alarm for a prank will get caught.

Yes, most have a little visible tube that contains the stuff. It's invisible until put under a black light. Good luck.

My dad told me when I was kid these were common in California. He also told me about call boxes used to call 911 that used to handcuff your hand somehow to the call box until the police released you just in case you pranking them

Yes most do these days...........and it stays there for like a week. You can't wash it off..................... it's so the police can cathch a prankster or the fire department can thank the person who pulled it.
