The "Watermarks" are not only for digital photography, it is used for all the graphic works and Desk Top Publishing (DTP).
Like others said it is a light image to use as background (in old days) now they are also used to protect an image from using without permission.

Digital watermarking is a technique which allows an individual to add hidden copyright notices or other verification messages to digital images The technique takes its name from watermarking of paper or money as a security measure.

In digital photography it is usually referring to an image that is transparent so that a separate image on the same page shows thru. For instance, the FOX, NBC, ABC, ect logo at the bottom right hand corner of the TV programs that are used so heavily now is considered a digital water mark.

A watermark can be read by the computer,it prevents anyone from using your pics without your permission. It puts a digital code in the pic that can't be removed. It is like your invisible signature on it. It doesn't show up visibly unless you want it to. (That's hard to explain...LOL)

a watermark is a way to imbed copyright information into a digital picture. it can be visible on the pic like your name or website in semi-transparent letters. or it can be invisible but it will be viewable when someone looks at the information for the pic (like hitting command-I on a mac). there are many programs you can use to imbed watermarks like apple's aperture.
