So when the drivers in cars ahead of the ambulance look in the rearview mirror, they can see the word "AMBULANCE" clearly in the mirror. If "ambulance" wasn't written in a reverse manner, then when you looked in your rearview mirror you would see it in reverse!

It is written in reverse on the front of the ambulance so that driver's can look in their rear view mirror and see that it is an ambulance that they are failing to yield right-of-way for.
