My german spitz/pomeranian dog is crazy and hates everything. Especially dogs more than anything. He's already seven years old and I adopted him when he was two from a rescue and we think he was abused. I tried training him, but it didn't work. Does anyone know of a way to help him?

Many dogs are agressive towards other dogs, and it usually gets worse as they age if the behavior is not dealt with. Though you may be good at training, you need to get him to a proffesional.

When we get dogs that are agressive towards other dogs at the shelter, the staff include them in "doggy playgroups." It does wonders! But of course it doesn't work all of the time. Some canines just don't like others!

Apparently he did not get good training. I have rescued dogs with lots of aggressive issues and they have totally been rehab from it. I do not understand why you say he is crazy and hates everything.......He was not socialized appropriatly if he does not like other dogs, and I am sure this happened way before you if you adopted him from a rescue group. Socializing is very important. It takes lots and lots of patience and love, and of course, understanding THEIR side of things. You cannot be forceful but you need to walk him for an hour at least, each day. When he does something you do not approve of, correct him. Watch the "DOg Whisperer" on the National Geographic channel on cable tv and he has lots of ideas for you but I also suggest you get a professional trainer, but watch Dog Whisperer, you will get ideas. Just don't give up on him....it is very sad that some of these rescue dogs end up again at a shelter because their new owners can't figure them out or don't give them a chance. PATIENCE!!!!!

First of all make sure he sees the vet for a checkup to make sure there are no physical ailments causing his behavior.
The set aside special time to massage him and whisper to him softly. Comb him, or brush him, and start teaching him Good Boy and Bad Boy. Reward the good behavior with something he enjoys, like playing with a toy, brushing him or a treat and walk away from the bad behavior and say Bad Boy! very strong tone! and point your finger at him. Sometimes that will be enough but in some cases you may need to whop him with a rolled up newspaper. It doesn't hurt, but it startles them.
Pomeranians are very hyper animals and sometimes need sedatives in their golden years. I would try to avoid that if possible and find other alternatives.
Good Luck.

Try watching the "Dog Whisperer" on the National Geographic Channel. The web site will give you the show times and information about the show and Cesar Milan (the dog whisperer). It is an excellent show on dog behavior and how to fix major problems. Good luck

Like you said it sounds like he was mistreated before you got him. If a professional trainer couldn't help it's not likely anyone else can. Just give him as much love as possible and keep him away from other dogs. If he was younger I'd say give him time but at 7 he's lived at least half his life already. Wish I could help. Sorry.

i'd get advice from several different trainers on this issue. and i'd avoid petsmart. the one in my area told me my pit mix had aggression issues. scared me senseless. but when my dog finally met the dog next door, they became instant friends - not even a growl or a snap. he now loves each and every dog he meets. even the teenie ones (and that's a cute site!).

If you have had him 5 years and he has not improved, I doubt if anything will help now. He should have had some training when you first got him. Now he is set in his ways.

Consult a behaviorist - not a trainer - different.
