Parvo is a fatal virus that makes dogs dehydrated. You would not tell a human that is being dehydrated no water for 24 hours. His advise would have killed my dog. Thank god for the internet. We found out what parvo was and called a family friend that has many dogs. She set us on the right track. Now knowing that the vets advise could have killed my dog is there anything I can do to help others know not to bring their dog there because he might not be giving the best care?

Parvo takes a week or two to fully develope. I got the dog a week before he started getting sick, upon adopting him I got him up to date on his shots, including a shot for parvo, he already got it from the pound he was in and we contacted them to tell them about the problem. I gave my dog the shots and it was too late. Also I gave my dog pedalyte and the real vet I took my dog to told me that it saved his life.

Sometimes they will give the dog fluids under the skin or in the vein and then they will sometimes say not to give food or water or anything by mouth for 24 hours, because if they are always bringing up everything that goes in it can cause more harm.
If a dog gets really bad diarrhea they will frequently tell you to fast them for 24 hours to give the intestine time to rest. If they knew it was parvo and did NOT give it fluids IV or SubQ, then not drinking for 24 hours was not great advice.
I would call the vet and ask to speak about the case and see what he has to say before spreading the word. You must make sure of the facts or it can be thought of as slander!!!!!!! If he is a quack, you do not want to do anything to give him reason to have anything on YOU!!!!

You are so sweet and kind. I hope the pup makes it through. There is no treatment for Parvovirus. You just have to support the pup through the disease. Some pups survive it, some don't. That's just the way it is. What you can do is to give it enough drinking water. Don't force it though and don't feed it. The virus attacks the gastro-intestinal system destroying the cells that are in contact with food and water. Even water can be harmful but we're taking risks here. It's better to combat bacterial infection later than lose the dog to dehydration quickly. If the vet will accept it, he may administer fluids to the pup intravenously. That would solve nutrition and dehydration issues but may cost a lot. I say give it a week. That's usually the whole course of the disease. Parvo isn't harmful to humans but scabies is transferrable. If it survives, give it a couple of weeks before you go back to the vet to start treating the scabies with ivermectin. That would be the easy part.

First of all I assume the vet who diagnosed Parvo gave the advice. Not being a vet I cannot comment except that Parvo is treated differently. However that said Parvo with its diahrea and dehydration can be mistaken for other problems and has to be definately diagnosed. If for example diahrea and dehydration is moderate and Parvo is not present , taking away water and substituting ice cubes in small quantities with restricted or absent diet is not unheard of for a small tome period.

Okay listen up closly. Parvo attacks young dogs and older dogs are not likely to get it, but puppies are bad to get it.
This is what I did to rid Parvo and it works.
take a teaspoon of clorox and pour it down the dogs throat and make sure he swallows it. He will then gag and spit because it is terrible obviously.
Then give him plenty of water to drink and juice.
Watch his stools when they start coming out hard again..He's cured.
I would never tell you this as a joke, I did this for my puppies and it worked and we saved the whole litter of Red Bone Hound Dogs.
Most of all your Country Folks here in Georgia know this and use it as a remedy, but be advised, if you wait too long the virus can spread and then your dog will die.
You have to do this the first sign you know your dog has parvo.
Good Luck

Dont be mad at the vet, be mad at yourself!! If you would have given your pet the proper shots there is no way he would have gotten parvo in the first place. You should not even own a dog if you are not going to get it's shots and everything it needs. It is YOUR fault the dog had to suffer with parvo!

A vet makes you withold food and water to prevent one or both of the following.
1) if an animal is being operated on and they have food in their digestive system it will make much less room for the doctor to be able to opperate, this can increase the chance of accidentaly nicking something they don't want to cut. also it can cause infections to occur, as well as other fatal complications during surgery.
2) when an animal is put under anestetics for surgery they loosecontroll of their bowels and bladder, so they need to be empty beforehand.
Not to mention the treatment for parvo is to withhold liquids as you can actually poison the animal by giving it food and water during certain stages ofthe desease. especially while undergoing treatment.
Trust your vet. he knows what he is doing, and by not following his instructions you could kill your dog.

I would go talk to him first and let him know what happened and what a bad diagnosis he gave you that almost killed your dog. Check with the ASPCA and find out what organization takes complaints about vets and file one. In all the years I have had so many dogs, I have found many vets to be worthless! But I have always given them a piece of my mind!

Word of mouth is the best advertisement. No food would have been good advise but no fluids very bad advise. Call the better business bureau or even the AVMA and make a complaint.

Are there any other vets in the same office? If so, request them when you go back. If not, I'd look around for another vet right away. Hope your baby feels better soon!
