First stay away from all white foods. No white bread, no white rice, no white sugar, no pasta and no white potatoes. You get the idea. In fact, stay away from ALL (added) sugars.

The best source of carbs in your diet are fruits and vegetables, (excluding white potatoes) Also, whole grains, steel cut oatmeal, brown rice and legumes/beans. Still using moderation, focus on getting your protein in first, along with a serving of vegetables and a serving of whole grains or rice.

If you are eating fruit... it has a very high sugar content, yes. So, since you are battling with PCOS (which I have personally dealt with), you want to eat your fruits in the morning on an empty stomach and alone. So, that means for breakfast you would have a bowl of fruit. Wait 1-2 hours before eating again or consuming protein. This gives the fruit a chance to digest and prevents putrification in your colon because protein takes 12 hours to digest. If you eat fruit and protein together, that fruit sits in your colon with the protein for 12 hours and starts to ferment. Fermentation can lead to a yeast overgrowth in the colon, also called Candidia which will throw your whole system out of whack.

For more information on this type of eating, refer to a search engine and type in "Proper Food Combining". Lee DuBelle wrote a fantastic book about this topic. She suffered from TONS of health issues that were resolved using this diet. Her site is:

Hope these suggestions help.

If you get regular exercise you may take in more than someone who sits on the couch all day. I cannot give you an answer because i don't know what your metabolism is like. If you are overweight and don't exercise, you do not need much, if you are a firefighter and burn carbs like heck, you probably don't have to worry about it. Rest assured though, if your diabetic and need to lose weight you should not be taking in much carbs in the first place. You really need to talk with your Doctor on this one because its a serious health issue.
